I have a custom built Ear Candy Buzzbomb, and I think it's a great cab, but I don't think I've got the right speakers in it. It's loaded with Eminence Red Ryders, which they don't even make anymore. The reason I went with them in the first place, is because I was used to playing through an old Marshal 4x12 cab loaded with Celestion G12T-75 speakers. The thing I do like about both the Red Ryder and the G12T-75 is the articulation, as in, I can rip out some technical thrash type riffs and every single pick will be heard with no mush, it will track every note as fast as I can possibly pick it. The thing is, they are too ice picky to my ears. I'd like something smoother and fuller sounding, but still with enough bite and cut; I want every pick, every note to be heard, no mater how fast I play.

I've played through the Eminence Wizards, and they were very nice, but didn't have the cut and fast pick-ability I like. I was thinking of just swapping out one of the Red Ryders for a Wizard, hoping to kind of get the best of both worlds, but I'm not sure.

So what do you think? Should I just swap one out for a Wizard, or is there a different set of speakers I should be looking at?

i know others will disagree with me on this, but i'd recommend you checking out vintage 30's. im doing a mix of both personally - 75's and 30's to get rid of exactly what your talking about. that way i get clear rhythm tones with plenty of definition and the v30's add a nice balance of warmth to the mix.

of course, all depends on the amplifier imho. but thats what i would recommend you try. V30's.

+1 on the Vintage 30's or WGS Veteran 30's, they will thicken up the sound. They mix well with G12T-75 type speakers too. I also like the mix of V30's and CL80's....

Agreed with above, but in another form....I don't like celestions unless they are about 30 years old. Either Weber speakers, or Governor/Man o War from Eminence. Rockin!

Well, I've played through V-30s before, and they seem to have an upper mid spike that bothers my ears. Maybe I should just replace one of my Red Ryders with a Wizard...

How is the EVM-12L?

Very clean sounding and heavy (weight). I like the smooth response on the EV and that it works with alot of amps. It has a bit of chime too that I like. I just wish they weighed less....

Guytron BigTone 55; I have a pair in my BuzzBomb and they kill. Very full with great top-end detail, sort of a V30 base with a Blue top and and the woodiness of the Greenback.

http://www.guytron.com, send Graydon an email and he'll hook you up.

You could also try out the Eminence Swamp Thang if 103db efficiency isn't too loud for you. It's a more American sounding speaker with a really deep tone to it, smooth high and and great open midrange. Overall it sounds "big", and it's what I originally ordered with my BuzzBomb. Not a crunchy speaker in the least, so if you want speaker distortion this isn't it. I liked these speakers, but they're WAY too efficient for my apartment, and I wanted to try something more British this time around.

Thanks for all the great responses guys. And Russ, I'm looking into those speakers, thanks!

regarding swamp thangs, they are, as stated, EXTREMELY powerful. makes the cleans on amps sound very fender twin-esque. they impart strong coloration; the midrange has a very dark and distinct oboe kind of sound... very notchy and makes an "ooooo" kind of sound. there's also a high-end presence about it that gives it some detail. overall, a huge and powerful sound that works really well for clean cleans, and tight, preamp distortion..... aka, great for metal. for that in-between crunchy sound, on the verge of breakup, not so much. also, they weigh a TON. i think they'd work great for a smoother tone but with still a lot of definition. there's a lot of note attack, but nothing is harsh at all about it. it also pairs REALLY well with a V30.

another one you may want to check out is a commonwealth. stupid magnet size and lots, and i mean lots of presence and articulation, but not fatiguing like a V30, though it may be too harsh at high volumes. all this being said, i'd go STs. very distinct sound.

Ive been using the swamp thing and a wizard together for about three years now in my port city 2x12os. killer combination but will make your amp alot louder! getting speaker grit from the wizard and huge chunk from the swamp thing.

I have tried the Swamp Thing, and that's not the tone I'm looking for.

I like V30s, except for a bit of harshness in the upper mids, but Avatar supposedly smooths them out and calls them Hellatone 60, and there is also the Hellatone 60L, which is supposed to have a deeper bass response. Anybody heard these in person, or own them here? What do you think of them?

I've got 4 60Ls and yes, definitely deeper bass response. The midrange is a bit different than a V30, notched down a bit in the freq. spectrum. If you're interested in two, PM me.

Speakers are like underwear...you can't return them once you try them out so I usually stick with the devil I know.....V30's and control the frequencies I don't like. I just ordered two new 4x12 Mesa Recto straight cabs and ordered me 4 loose G12T75's from Warehouse Speakers. Plan to X pattern them in the cabs or maybe two on top and V30's on bottom. This should take care of some of that.

Speaking of the Hellatone 60L's, I got to thinking and I do have two of them. Never did install them cause they were 16ohm instead of 8ohm and I couldn't use them at the time. They are Celestions with a sticker on top of the Celestion sticker. I think Dave just breaks them in is all and flexes them for a few hours. Never installed them though, so can't give an assessment of them.

I had also ordered an EC Buzzbomb about 8 months ago. I wrote it off and don't think I will ever see it until I go back to the US and pay Tim a visit.

I like V30s quite a bit, but definitely not my favorite. Using only 1 speaker type is boring   Different speakers have EQ quirks that amp EQ can never get IMO.

60L; different voicecoil AND dustcap than a V30, so there is a substantial tonal difference. The Hellatone 60 (without the 'L') is a standard 'aged' V30.
