Is there a gate better/faster than the Zuul+?

Yeah mine has 4 jacks, none of them are labeled but I have a screenshot that Joe posted on the FB group years ago that I reference.

Just wish I knew what it was doing and if there's a key input/if im doing that part right.

There is no key input on the 4 jack.

one jack goes from your guitar, one to your amp input, the other two are for the loop. It's way LESS complicated than a key input

Thanks....good to know.

I've always wanted a zuul but the key being so confusing for me and talks of needing a secondary pedal for that function to work just made it much less appealing to me.

I know you can bypass that with the zuul + but then for me whats the point if I already have a good gate.

I think the blockade is way better than the zuul and zuul+ personally

Its similar circuit wise but way easier to use (IMO) and slightly less tone suck (all gates have it to some extent)

They sure do.

I watched a very in depth video on YouTube with tons of graphs and scientific testing and tbh the zuul was not the winner.

I believe the user recommended the Gstring 2 if I recall correctly and said he was removing the zuul from his board. He didnt test the Blockade or the gate and key or many others however.

To my ears though, we are splitting hairs like always.

Yeah. When redoing my cables i have to pick up the pedalboard like a neanderthal to read the tags because i dont think of using my phone...but at least they are fjcking labled

The gstring x made gates great again

If I needed a full on gate (like if i was playing death metal again) I would 100% buy another blockade or tannhauser

I have a decimate mini and the gate in my engl artist which is fine for medium gain punk stuff that i'm playing now

I A/Bed the Gstring 2 and mini and they were very similar tbh

The gate and key is great, same with the pylon, I put them both on the level of the blockade

I'm not a big zuul fan - it has way too much tone suck for me personally, but I get why people use it

I’m having no issues with tone suck with mine, in fact the buffered outputs are incredibly useful on my board.

I just keep everything wired in this soft case that came with my board. Never leaves the case.

My footswitch cables are colored from the factory so all I have to remember is send and return, my return cable is colored too, so it makes it super quick and easy. Just unplug everything from the amp/guitar, wrap cables and lay on top of pedals and done.

The only thing that bugs me here is i wish my send from the GE7 was right angled. Same with green guitar cable to tuner I guess but not a huge deal.

The pedal bags i get with my boards will absolutely fit the board in them, but not when i put pedals on...it is baffling

I guess the only downside is that my EQ pedal and sometimes some other things will get moved around, the settings will change and I have to double check that.

It's one of those things whether it either doesn't bother you at all, or it drives you nuts

All gates have tone suck though, its inherent in the design - and each one has it's own unique way that it changes the sound. Famously in the case of the boss noise suppressor, sometimes more subtly in other pedals

guptech sun gate although a zuul clone, it's been modified a bit

i would still fo with the g sting or preferably the g rack, i used the newer hum extractor extravaganza, and wasn't impressed or felt it was something that was needed past the g rack

the tc i've heard has issues with i can't remember maybe headroom, but the idea of being able to make it super whatever in the compoopter is a cool idae

I've been looking at replacing my zuul+ with the Ibanez Ptgate but haven't pulled the trigger yet. No issues with the key, its pretty simple? Just guitar in the key, go out to the side to pedals > amp in, then run your fx loop send in the top and go out of the zuul to your delays > fx return on the amp.

The buffer in the zuul is actually pretty good but its disengaged when the pedal is off, for that reason I always leave it on even though its not doing much.
I tested the buffer vs straight low capacitance cables and it was pretty close. When its off (true bypass) I lose some top end.

I use a Zuul+ 4 cable method before the amp. Only put compressor, overdrive, boost, distortion and fuzz in the gate loop. Tuner and wah before Zuul+. Modulation after the Zuul+. EQ and delay in amp loop.

Basically the pedals that cause noise are in the noise gate loop.

If you want faster turn the Gate knob all the way up. Then back it off just enough to get sound. Basically the lower the threshold the slower the gate speed.

Is there any advantage to doing it this way? You will still get noise from the preamp if you crank it, no?

I don't use amps that the preamp is making much noise. It just sounds more natural to me this way. If the amp preamp or a effect in the loop made a lot of noise I would put the gate loop in the amp effects loop.

A lot of my amps don't have a effects loop or master volume. All the noise comes from the pedals I am putting in the gate loop.

The gate speed on and off is effected by the key. So I try to have the least before the key.

I'm sure most of you know all this stuff. The details are for people less experienced.

I edited my post above after you quoted it.

I think the string won't help in your situation. If you aren't running it in the loop, i dont feel like it is the answer. I am impressed that the zuul is killing all the noise since you aren't running in loop. That is cool.

I think the hardest gates i have heard of are the boss like @Techdeth uses
They are great . Push the amp harder with them
