Do it!! I think a Goldtop Les Paul is one of the sexiest looking guitars ever. I am wanting a R7 now

axcess, edwards, epiphone, gibson - the companies change only a few of the variables i mentioned. change the others - and you dont have a les paul anymore :)

edit:

i forgot to mention tuning?

they do look great though. some of the bursts that exist only look great on a les paul design guitar.

I have both a '79 LP Custom and a PRS Singlecut. I find that the PRS is a little bit easier to play because of the wider fretboard radius and slightly longer scale-length. I play different types of music on each one since they don't sound the same. The Les Paul is much better for a mid-heavy, raw, meaty tone. The PRS is better for singing, smooth leads and a glassy, chime-like clean tone or a modern type of overdrive and riffing. They each do something the other one can't. There's no use comparing them.

If I HAD to choose between the two, for example which one to save in a fire or something? I'd take the Gibson.

same thing man.. compared to at least a prs for the same price.. im pretty sure the prs beats most of the LPs in terms of build quality looks and playabilty.. i already own a lp custom which i wont sell cause it sounds killer but i tend to find myself looking at new R0's from time to time

Sorry, man, but this is ridiculous.

9 times outta 10 PRS kicks Gibson's ass for build quality and playability. Tone is always subjective and Gibson lovers will swear till they're blue in the face about how great their LP sounds.....even if it doesn't.

Don't agree there at all. I just spent 2 days walking around Tokyo looking at more PRS and Gibson guitars than I have ever seen in my life. Literally hundreds of each. PRS guitars are absolutely beautiful, but, in my opinion, they have no mojo and their tone is not anything special. I played some of the VOS LPCs and they had much more tone and vibe for me. I know it is very easy to bash Gibson because of all the stupid marketing shit they do (upside down V's and the Hendrix shit don't help  ), but it seems to me more like a forum instilled belief that Gibsons suck. :dunno: You can find duds of any manufacturer, guaranteed. Also, it seems that a lot of PRS guys won't play anything after 1991 when they moved to the production factory. Hard core PRS guys have told me that the guitars produced in the factory are nowhere near the older ones. That is something I hear quite a lot.

I had half a dozen PRS guitars, great build quality and superb to play ........ sold them all when I started playing live again after many years off ........ they were just so sterile, had no grunt behind them :(

I've owned a few PRS guitars and (like I said earlier) I currently own a PRS and a Gibson. They are both fantastic guitars. But, you can't compare them. They have two totally different sounds and neither one can do what the other can. They aren't interchangeable.

Did you go to Japan just to look at instruments or vacation or what? I used to live in Japan. If you want to know about some cool places to visit, let me know.

NOW, I'm going to get shit for this from some of you...*cough cough* Digijams, Chubtone, *cough* But I've been playing my Anderson Drop Top and Suhr S4 and recently found a LP i thought i liked, guess what? My Anderson and Suhr play so great i couldn't get used to the LP. I felt like i was fighting it all the time. I guess it's not fair comparing Gibson playability to an Anderson or Suhr though

But if i want to "get close" to LP tone I might go with an Anderson Cobra or PRS McCarty. They're close enough tonewise where nobody in a crowd or recording would be able to tell anyway. I'm starting to put comfort and playability ahead of tone for my needs from the guitar, then for tone i can always tweak my amp, pedals, etc to get the sound i need.

Yes Scott...suck it.

I agree with you 110% on this one. The top tier Les Paul knockoffs at www.rondomusic.com beat the hell out of any Gibson's I have ever played (I own one, mind you). I've had the priviledge of playing Customs, Supremes, 80's Customs, Standards, Studios, Historics... you name it. None of them really feel like well made guitars. They have intonation issues, they are more inclined to break at the headstock joint than any guitar in production. It's really ridiculous.

I am the guitar tech for Charlie Sexton and Stu Kimball in the Bob Dylan band and we are on tour in Japan and South Korea. We have been over here about 3 weeks or so. A fellow Rig-Talker (boof) who lives in Japan took me around to all the shops in Shibuya and Ochanomizu. Literally a 10 hour day of walking around looking at guitars. Then I took some of the band out and did it all again yesterday. It's a blast over here.

I guess I'm in the minority here (shocking, I know!!) but I don't get the whole PRS thing..I can't get my fat sausage fingers to be comfortable on them....but if I pick up an LP that's set up to my liking I can fist small third world nations with it...

then again, it's a preference thing...some builds/necks are going to be more comfy for an individual than another....

you can argue build quality between brands...but as far as 'guitar x rips guitar y a new one in terms of playability, which is why you should get one!!!' is really a non argument...it's an individual preference..

I've TRIED very hard to like PRS. While the guitars are certainly top-notch build-wise, they do nothing for me tone or playing wise. Compared to a great les paul, a comparable PRS comes off as sterile and stiff. Again this is all MY opinion. Fuck them both... I can't afford either... LOL! :D

YEAH!!!!!! I find the PRS necks to be too damn wide at the nut..they're built nice and your'e either going to dig or not dig the looks (I don't dig the looks) and the electronics (I find a rotary pickup switch to be dumb), but their necks are like baseball bats...

I played an anderson tele that was the same way...built well, sounded good but the neck was like a tree trunk
Yup. While the LP neck isn't exactly thin, it just feels better to me for some reason. Even the SC245 (which is the same spec as the LP) still feels sterile and stiff by comparison.

YEAH!
Psst...

FUCK YOU!!

no..I insist....FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bottom line:

As with any manufacturer, there will be bad examples to go along with the good examples. :2thumbsup:

But once you play a good one, you'll know what all the Les Paul hype is about.

These are mine, and they are going no where.

Gary Moore (original, not BFG), 1957 Les Paul Special (the real deal), Les Paul Gothic.
