Closing in on 30 years, badass! I'm guessing PRS only uses poly finishes. No beef with poly at all in fact I kind of prefer it in a gigging instrument. Takes a beating and keeps looking great for years. I've actually put my Edwards up wet after a gig where some rain got on the stage and just dried it and the case out when I got back to the house. Not too much worry with a nice poly.

Yeah I believe it's poly. The only chips it has are where I've dinged it pretty hard, and even then the chips are really small. Sounds awesome acoustically though, I have no complaints about the sound at all.

Have had a few come and go over the years. Missed a 97 custom 22 so much that I bought another 90s custom 22 just recently. These are the remaining guitars. Most are somewhat unique and polarizing.

Private Stock Custom 24 built to honor a family member. Quilt maple top, grain filled swamp ash body, Rosewood neck, pale moon ebony boards

I also had one of the limited Tremonti Joe Fenton editions. Still have the Gen 1 Tremonti next to it.

Currently own 3. A 01 Custom 22, and a pair of 594’s. I’m a fan of the Dragon pickups, and to me, sounds PRS’s ish, and work well for me. The 594’s have the lower wound pickups, and to my ears, really lend themselves to more of that LP tone, just more clear and balanced, if that makes sense. This is my LP killer Burst.

my understanding is that the silver sky is supposed to be close to a vintage strat. I'm not the biggest strat guy, so I honestly can't say if that's really true or not. I do like my SS, though, so it works for me.

From what I remember, it was supposed to be a modern take on a vintage style. Which, they are not all that strat like in feel, but they mostly sound like one.

The reverse headstock does retain the strat feel up around the nut, but the guitar feels a decent bit smaller than a strat. The lower horn cut away, is nothing like a strat, the SS feels like there is enough room to keep a groupie or two in there. To me standing a playing, the SS hangs on me more like a Wolfgang and closer to a Les Paul than a strat.

I personally prefer the Fenders though.

Here is a shot of all of mine together.

IIRC, PRS started using a hybrid nitro finish sometime around 2014, think mixed with urethane or something. They had some problems with it, changed a couple of time, and finally found something that worked around 2018 or so. I think it's mostly nitro now, they call it high-gloss nitro, but who knows what their marketing dept is really talking about. Somebody that knows more than I do might have more details. I really don't care as long as it feels good and wears well.

I've heard a lot about people having problems with clouding and I've seen some that did. But, of the 7 I've owned, I haven't had any problems. I think most of that problem was during the hybrid nitro experiments and isn't nearly as common now. What I've heard is that it's caused by moisture being trapped under the finish, which could come from a previous coat, what I think was happening with PRS, or from the wood itself, which has happened to more than a few builders. But, I'm not a finish expert.

Here's another of mine, 2016 Wood Library Hollowbody with a Korina body and neck. Stock except for the gold rings and BKP Stormy Mondays. Despite its looks, it's a really great rock guitar. Korina sounds like a cross between mahogany and ash, to me. It's really snappy but has a warm body like an SG or LP Jr.

My CU22 I got in 98. My main guitar.

Someone tried to break it between soundcheck and the gig like 15 years ago. While I was at the motel washing my luxurious hair and balls. It survived but has some chunks of poly removed. It's a defiant mofo.

I was gonna say I’m fairly certain my blue one is some kind of nitro. I have a few tiny dings and it’s a pretty thin finish. It looks amazing though

Here's another old family pic. I've added3 since then including the purple one a few posts back.

2007 McCarty Korina w/Brazilian board and BKP Nantuckets, 2015 Modern Eagle Quatro, stock, 2015 Hollobody II, stock, and the blue one I already posted.

They all sound different with P90s, lower output, semi-hollow with lower output, and higher output. All but the CU24 has a wide-fat neck, but that's not too far away from a '59 LP, just a little chunkier. I'd call them more of a C or even V than a D. The ME and HB2 have rosewood necks, the MC has a korina neck, and the CU24 has a mahogany neck

I have quite a few but just posted my private stocks. I went to PRS last year and picked the wood for 3 PS holcomb’s at the factory. That was a sick experience as I met another member here in person who I have been friends with for years and he did the tour and build for his at the same time. During the process we got to talk to about our builds and collaborate and geek out at the factories. Hopefully those guitars are done soon.

The next one is kind of a funny story. My first nice guitar was a PRS custom 24. I ordered it from PRS and it showed up and looked like shit. But I worked my ass off for the guitar and it was my main gigging guitar and sounded great. Anyway I beat the shit out of it for years and eventually wasn’t playing it at all because my tastes for specs had changed. But I would never sell it due to sentimental value. But I wanted to play it more. I had the guitar rebuilt. Full refinish. Replace the fretboard with ebony. Compound radius. Stainless jumbos. Install black lip inlays. All new hardware and electronics. Now it looks, plays, and plays absolutely amazing.

Those are awesome, love the green ash with the pale moon board. How did you get PRS to customize the control layouts? I had asked my dealer to build a custom 22 and it was a hard no. Won't even request or do control layouts. Unsure if it was the dealer or if PRS has really been that strict about changes. Did you customize anything hardware or control related on the holcomb?

First, I love both those builds you have.

PRS appears to be super picky about what things they’ll entertain. It also seems to be based on year you order. Based on the model. And based on the dealer and their relationship with PRS

For example some dealers say PRS will not allow them to order direct pickups because it isn’t on the order sheet. But another dealer got it for me the next day.

PRS also used to offer stainless frets and different radiuses on their models. But when I asked the private stock team in person at the factory if they could do stainless and a different radius for the 3 builds I was there to do I got a flat and immediate no. My holcombs were ordered with direct pickups but they messaged me after I submitted my spec sheets and said they won’t build that model with DM pickups anymore at all. It almost feels random honestly.

Forgot to answer the last part. Besides the Dm pickups it was standard hardware but just in black. No modified layout. But PRS was willing to do insane options like the zombie board or fill a whole neck in luminlay…but not do a custom 24 in 20” radius like a Holcomb. They also wouldn’t let me do PRS \m/ pickups on the Holcomb model. I assume due to an artist contract but still found that funny. They won’t do a 20” custom 24 but would build a 7 string multi scale with a 16” radius…just weird randomness. They also wouldn’t build a custom 22 for years even in PS. No idea why. I think they’re back now though.
