Sounds like greenbacks to me. I use a 90s checkered Marshall reissue cab and it definitely has that Wicked Sensation/River Of Love tone.

To my ear, the SLO likes greenbacks better than V30s. They sound smoother and juicier.

This!

I think its sounds just like a SLO, form clips ive heard. For both rhythms and lead, doesnt have the agression and brightness you normally find with Marshalls.

Its much smoother and darker compared to other Lynch tones, for example Back for the Attack.

I think its 100% SLO, dont hear marshall at all.

Great Album!

Watch the video. He's plugged into the purple plexi with that orange quilted maple ESP Strat H/S/S ebony board with a Boss SD-1 during the solo overdub session for the album...so AT LEATS the solos are Marshall...

The Screamin Demon wasn't out until after the record was complete. I believe that he used a Duncan Distortion and a JB.

Sceamin' Demon was indeed used (confirmed by Lynch and guys/mods at the Duncan forum), and it was in the alder-bodied Haji. SLO was also used (again confirmed by Lynch), but maybe for rhythm tracks *I think*. That massive dark tone is what makes me think its an SLO and not a typically upper mid heavy/bright Marshall sound. :dunno: The Pittman Purple Plexi was used for the leads as far as I can guess, but again its speculation.

The REH video of the overdubs is the purple Plexi, not the SLO. You can see the cord going into the Plexi and no cord in the SLO. And I'm not 100% sold that it was the exact setup for the record; it may just have been set up for the REH vid . . .

SLOgriff and Lynch's tech are so far the only two guys I've seen swearing the rhythm tracks were Marshall and not SLO hehe. :D

With the right guitar, the Screamin' Demon (worst name ever for that pickup) actually sounds really good. I played an ESP Haji through one of the new DSL amps and loved it. The Demon in any of my guitars and it is an utter disappointment. Yuck x 10

Anywho, so I assume greenbacks are the way to go then?

If you can get past the fact that the demon isn't a high output pickup and more in lines with a 59 then you may like it. I used them and I like them in some guitars. I also like using them in the neck position as well.

Maybe try out green backs if you can first.. you might not enjoy the bottom as you turn the amp up with a drummer... just sayin

I was always searching for the WS tone. I found it on a Mesa Mark V on channel 2: crunch mode W/ a tube screamer through the stock Mesa C90 speaker. I then realized there was some studio magic, sold the Mark V and moved on.

There's always studio magic involved in every tone we chase... that's the bottom line. I think you could get ballpark with anything crunching like a marshall and boosted with a reasonably hot pup and the mids not scooped. As for WS, I also hear it as slightly darker with not as much cut as the Dokken stuff. Might just be mic placement though, who knows!! I also would go with greenbacks for the win with royer 121's and SM57's on the speaker.

A.........MEN!!!

screamin demon -1

surprised if that lame pickup was used on that album

almost makes you wonder if the pickup was tuned to tame over reliance on distortion.

I bought a screamin demon 13 years ago, it was a big dud and a disapointment, sent it back pronto.

Well I have a Soldano cab with a pair of Lynchbacks and a pair of Eminence Wizards (combo of a Greenback and a G12H-30), so that should be decent. I used to have a pair of M75 and H75 Scumbacks in there, but just didn't have the "punch" that I like with V30s.
