Mastodon... Why am I not getting these guys ????

Mastodon and Opeth are 2 of my favorite bands. I've been a big Mastodon fan since the Lifesblood EP on vinyl. I think Crack the Syke is a masterpiece of music. Leviathan is still my favorite album personally, but Crack the Skye is incredible IMO.

One of my favorite bands! No hooks and that's the point I think. I like the fact that there song structures are not the norm, verse/chorus... verse/chorus... end of song.... blah! Different tastes I suppose.

I personally don't look for hooks when judging music. I mean some music needs catchy hooks but for metal I just want...good music! I'm going to try one more time to get into these guys. Maybe I can get past the vocals if I try a different album.

FWIW, during different eras they used different vocalists. For Remission it was all their bassist (the bassist is the one with the angsty growl type vocal). The bassist had a much smaller part in Blood Mountain and Brent started to come more to the front of the vocal parts. By Leviathan the lead vocals were all Brent. Crack the Skye it was mostly Brent and I think the other guitarist chimed in as well. I'm just saying that saying their vocals suck is a blanket statement. It's only about a 2in blanket

Everyone in the band sings lead at some point. Troy Sanders (bassist) does both clean vocals and the low growling voice. Brent Hindes does clean vocals, he's got the higher whiney kind of voice. The drummer, Brannon Dailor, sings lead on the title track of their latest record "Crack the Skye", as the song is about his sister Skye who took her own life at a young age. The album is dedicated to her.

Opeth crushes Mastodon in every way possible though. Musically more complex, more intense, way more dynamics, better solos, better singing... it goes on. I like Mastodon too... Forget Crack the Skye, get Watershed.

EXACTLY!!!

just because i dont like them doesnt mean shit

I think they they are pretty good and got alot of originalty going on which is hard to do

I will say though I could listen to opeth almost everyday. AWESOME BAND!

Opeth is my favorite band, and Mastodon is up there too. I don't think they are comparable though. Completely different bands doing completely different things.

I think it's the opposite. They have TOO many hooks in one song. It's hard to latch on to one. By the time you do another comes along. I like Mastodon, but I've gotta be in the mood to listen to them. After about 4 songs, I'm good for awhile.

It's funny you say that, because that's how I describe my original music. As soon as the listener becomes comfortable with the music, it changes. Lots of tempo/time signature changes and acoustic guitar breaks. A lot of my riffs change time signature 3 or more times in the riff. I love doing stuff like that, keeps me on my toes.

really shouldn't compare Opeth to anybody....they are in a league of their own.

I've been in bands with guys who write with this attitude. Being a guitarist, it does make playing things like that interesting. But when I listen to music like that, a lot of times it's hard to remember much about the song after the music stops. There's a difference when something sounds good while I'm playing it, and then I take off the guitar and listen to it. That's what I really love about certain bands: their ability to write something, a riff, hook, or melody that I just can't get out of my head.

I don't write like that on purpose, of course. I think a lot of modern "metal" bands play like that on purpose to be "different", and it always sounds forced to me.

My original music has hooks to it as well though. Repeated riffs for chorus parts and such.
