Did they shove the microphones up their asses and then record their amps? Because that's what that one youtube video sounds like.

I think their simplicity is what appeals to Mastodon fans, how many 64th note tripplet charged songs coming at you at 160bpm can a person listen to, enjoyably?

I dont think the word simplicity should be used to describe them, they are all over the friggin place and not in a good way, I seen them 2x in the last 6 mos. and tried to get into it...no dice ...didnt help live they sound like a pile of mush and its not the gear..or is it?
oh vultures thats accurate to the live sound..

It's a combination of the low tuning on that song (they drop the E string down to B) and YouTube compression making it sound like that. It sounds a bit better on the album.

They have awesome "spots" in songs but overall I think the production is weak and it gets tired after a few songs (songs and production). For eg. they have a remarkable drummer but the drums always sound like crap. Some bands I think are afraid to sound polished and huge as if it takes away from their "outsider" vibe. I'll spend my money on bands that musically sound outside but aren't afraid to record that shit with some flair.

I get that they are trying to be progressive metal, with imagery and opus like tracks. I just don't think they are very good at it personally. I agree that they have some "cool spots/parts", but then it just ends in a mess. I also think their guitars sound terrible. Very loose and scrambled. Maybe it's their technique, don't know. Hate the standard drop B thing too. I can't stand Bret Hinds either.

Have you heard Crack the Skye?

After two records in a row that sounded meh I gave up before that one was released. I checked out some Skye tunes on YT and it did sound better but I've also lost interest in their music by this time. FWIW I did think Oblivion was great until the solo sections. I like the way they intertwine the three vocalists on that one.

I really liked Mastodon a few years ago, then kind of forgot about them for a while. But just recently I've been listening to them heaps and love some of their riffs. There's a killer riff in The Czar from the 'Crack the Skye' that I just can't stop playing.

I'm not a metalhead at all but I REALLY dig Mastodon. Weirdly enough, I also dig LoG so what does that tell you??

Mastodon is one of my favorite bands. I love absolutely every release they've done, especially the last 2.
I never get sick of this band, and i can never get enough of them.
They were awesome both times I saw them live too.

This song is probably my favorite mastodon track, the drum work is just unreal

They definitely have their own thing going both vocally & musically so I can see why it might not be for some. Personally I love me some Mastodon. I've been listening to them since Leviathan. I remember picking that album up at the same time as the first Lamb of God cd I checked out. Traditionally the Lamb of God stuff was more my style at the time, but I just couldn't stop listening to Leviathan. I wasn't even sure if I liked it at first, but it was just so different (to me anyways) that I just kept listening to it over & over   . In the end Mastodon won me over. I've been wearing out Crack the Skye since it first came out & I can still pop that cd in at anytime & not be bored with it. As far as metal goes for me right now, these guys, Opeth, & Gojira seem to be in constant rotation  .

the few Mastadon tunes i've heard havn't grabbed me, but the underground band that the drummer and one guitarist were in in the late 90s, Lethargy, is one of my top 3-4 technical metal bands ever. also included the guitarist who founded Sulaco. absolutely nuts.

I like the way you think.

I like them a lot. Blood Mountain is probably my favorite. I'd much rather listen to Mastodon vs Opeth.

I think Crack The Skye is a great disc. It took a couple listens but it stuck hard after that. I am not a big fan of the rest of their tunes though.

It does take a couple listens, to me, they really came together musically and with their songwriting on Blood Mountain. Crack the Skye evolved even further. You've got to listen to their albums IN FULL a couple of times. All the songs tie together with common themes throughout the album(s).
FWIW, it doesn't hurt be to real high when listening :D

I do think there's alot going on in their songs , so I'm hoping to still give them a chance . I guess I keep going from cd to cd by them and need to focus on just one , but I do wish the Low Fi sound could be replaced with a better sound quality ... I mean it sounds like they recorded with the band in a gaint room with them at one end and the recording mics. at the other and that's the part I am strugling with more than anything else . Sure the vocals could be better too , but I think it's the sound that is killing it for me the most ! so damn muddy
