the few Mastadon tunes i've heard havn't grabbed me, but the underground band that the drummer and one guitarist were in in the late 90s, Lethargy, is one of my top 3-4 technical metal bands ever. also included the guitarist who founded Sulaco. absolutely nuts.

Burke. I play in Sulaco as well, but yeah... Lethargy was legendary.

We opened for Mastodon last May, it was weird, but epic.

I'm not a fan of Mastodon personally.

They are my favorite band and have been for quite a while.

I think you have to listen to them a lot before you "get" them.

I don't get most of mastodon stuff too
they are the kind of band that you need to get into their vibe to enjoy, cause you wont have references that sound like them

I wasn't much impressed with karnivool, for example, and now it's among my all time favorites, along with alice in chains, pantera, sabbath, tool and soundgarden
they just managed to do their own thing, like my other favorites

even though I just don't understand most of Mastodon's stuff, I respect what they do and how they do it
Oblivion is a truly great song, and I like most of Crack the Skye, but their older heavier stuff is hard to follow

There are little bits and pieces within their songs that appeal to me, but on the grand scale - the picture grande - I don't really gel with 'em. I think they've got some great tones, great songwriting, great "fresh approach", but it does little for me in the "wow this is exciting and awesome" sense. Furthermore, as much as I WANT some fresh aggressive metal, I cannot tolerate cookie monster vocals or groveling Grover bullshit. I know it's an age thing, and it's awesome, and it's simply 'taking it to a new level', but if it sounds anything like what I just mentioned, it gets turned off IMMEDIATELY. I have NO time for it.

Opinions and assholes, everyone's got one.

V. :dunno:

I don't mind some CM vocals but I agree with you here. Great parts but not a great whole.

I bought one of their records after reading a guitar world interview and Brent Hinds' answer to every question was "weed". For instance; "what was your inspiration for some of the riffs on this record?" BH: "weed". "How did you develop your tone on the album?" BH: "I smoked a bunch of weed and that's what came out". You get the picture. After listening to the CD, I was convinced that he was serious - some cool stuff here and there but not my thing.

I ended up meeting him at one of the Van Halen reunion shows in Atlanta (I think there from Atlanta?). He was seated about three rows down from me and was completely "un-glued" for the entire concert. Screaming, pulling his hair, jumping up and down, just completely flipping out. It was actually more entertaining than VH
