Ed didnt use the ge10 until the japan 78 tour,he couldnt have used it for the recording of Van halen 1.Plexi + ge10 not enough saturation gain for VH1.

Well... you say it, so I guess it's so... Honestly, the GE-10 isn't really necessary... a good PPIMV does everything needed if ya can't crank it full out... IMHO... YMMV...

Brutal ! I had been trying to check the forum for some technical info and couldn't get there the past few days.. hope everything resolves itself but i suppose it isn't looking good. Such a shame as there are years and years of useful threads and helpful people over there.

The knowledge that I shared(Van halen sound) was from my conversations with Jose Arrenedondo and other people that were involved with Edward back in the late 70s into the 80s.Your memory is good I would argue about achieveing the Van halen 1 sound from a stock plexi which is BS and I stand by that today.Sah5150 you build amps then you should know that....

I could get it from a stock plexi... With a Boss GE-10, just like Ed did... Regardless, I thought you were talking about amp knowledge - thanks for clarifying. I knew Jose pretty well back in the mid-80s - nice dude that did some great work for me...

That is terrible news George! Metro has been such a wonderful resource for me and many others over the years!

I hope things are retrievable for all of our sakes!

Seems like the computer hacking is really getting out of control lately!

Wow, that really stinks. I bet many who make their living doing amp mods etc will love that all that info is no longer available. I really hope that somehow the forum can be recovered.

For those who care, the situation is not good. The server was infected by malware. It may have been a malicious attack and we are looking into that forenzically. The malware is so deeply embedded that they don't know if they can remove it, there's a distinct possibility that I will lose everything from over 10 years online. My entire web archive, forum, store, database and both websites could be gone. The longer this continues, the more likely it seems that it is lost.

I'll be the first to blame myself for not being better protected and fully backed up off site. It's 100% my own fault. I'm a complete internet neophyte and didn't comprehend the possibilities for loss or what steps should have been taken to prevent this catastrophie.

It makes me physically ill to think about all the info that may be lost from metro forum. So many amazing techs, tonal breakthroughs, passionate debates etc, including posts from people who are longer with us. Most of that can never be replaced. The forum was far bigger than me and metroamp, I feel like it was my responsibility to maintain and preserve it and I dropped he ball.
There's a chance that internet cache may have some of those pages saved and could be part of a painstaking start over from scratch.

For now, it doesn't look good but we are exploring every option and resource to recover as much as possible. I'll do my best to post updates.

I could not agree more, and really the proof is listening to pete thorns sl68 with no boost. All the gain of VH1 wright there

All the gain of early VH in a stock '68 Marshall? I don't think so. I see plenty of vids of guys trying to get that sound with no outside help (boosts) but IMO it's not the same.
Live, his amps sounded like French fries were cooking when he stopped playing. That's stock? LOL That's boosted, regardless of what he used to do it.

Pete Thorn absolutely nails VH I with a stock plexi clone @ 90v. So whoever says you need mods to achieve that tone is just plain wrong. Just an old Marshall/clone and ALOT of volume.

Rockstah's mods achieved that tone at low volume's FWIW.

Anyways to stay on topic, that really sux George and i for one hope's that you can save all the info. Not just for my personal gain, but because you are a good guy. Best of luck Mr Velvet.

Those clips don't sound like VH1 or any other VH I heard. I collect live concerts, of which I got tons of early VH, and like I said, those Marshall's were boosted so much, that even using a humbucker, his amps sounded like cooking French fries when he stopped playing.
