Michael Sweet explains how to get the Stryper tone

Let's not forget the video implied that they had Orange "loan" them that amp.. I guess that means they can 't afford one amp?? Anyway, the CArvins must be their sponsored deal and from what I hear about those amps, why not. They seem to be straight up rockers similar to an older JMP but with more EQ shaping possibilities. Besides, if they were responsible for Steve Vai's shitty tone with Alcatrazz why not Stryper?? It was a cool vid though, I like the way you can really hear the para EQ doing it's thing. Maybe a cheaper alternative to a Furman? Those of you who have owned them would have to chyme in on that one.

As for Styper, much respect for their live performances, chops, and great vocals but man, what cheesy lyrics. Just brutal. I spent part of the afternoon listening to a few of their songs. Just cheese ball. And bibles into the crowd?? seriously? If I want bible thumping rock I'd listen to Tesla. I heard they were into that. As I can't tell and I dug their music, I'd say they got their message to me more clearly. Anyway..

Not really into that toan, but i now have a burning desire to put yellow tape all over my gear. :checkthisout:

If Carvin sponsored them the amps wouldn't be hidden by Line 6 stuff.

Am I the only one who like the "Sans" off tone better??

Big fan of Stryper. Great players & singers, but have never liked that scooped, honky sound

Not enough gain for what they do.

I've talked to many people who saw them over the past 6 months or so and all saw Carvins. They were kind of hidden, here is a pic I took:

IMAG0116.jpg

This was taken from the side of the stage, in between a Line 6 cab and the drums, could not be seen from the front or the back of the stage, only the side. The one with the "M" on it I assume to be Michaels. I have pics somewhere that show all the Line 6 heads were powered but no speaker cables. I'll try to find them.

Believe me, these guys know the tone they want and are tone chasers. I highly doubt they are just using any old backline that happens to be at the venue they are playing. Besides, I watched them as they loaded all their gear up into the trailer the bus was pulling.

I just want this to be clear that Im not trying to start a pissing match because I'm not lol
Im not desputing that there were Carvins being used at the gig you saw. Clearly they were used as the pictures you shot show. Im just saying that Ive seen them many times, was back stage when they played here in my area and there were no Carvins. That's all Im saying. What Im also saying is that I have that sound NAILED cold and they really arent needed for that sound. That's all  Ive also seen Oz use a POD floor unit for his sound.

Bottom line is they have played different amps over the last 6 years or so. Peavey XXX, Marshall DSLs, Line6, etc. No big thing to me, other that I think their covers album
's tone is bad if they did use Line6 like they said.

No surprise about the Carvin X100b. Great amp. I'd play it over the Line6. Plus, that Carvin yellow V guitar is early 80's.

I have always found Strypers tone unique, but man that Tech21 makes that thing sound like a $200 peavey rockmaster preamp.

Yeah, That's all Im saying.. That they are most definitely gear hounds and use a ton a different amps these days

With that said, there tone has never been the same after they stopped using the Boogies and Parametric EQ.
To me that was there best sound
Even using the Tech 21 with a MK V doesn't get the same sound as the PQ3 did IMHO

No problem man, I didn't mean to come off sounding confrontational. All I am saying is that I think its a little telling when you have to hide the amp your sound is coming from. Usually means its the amp you prefer but not getting paid for.

That Orange amp would soon be the heaviest doorstop around.

Interesting how he demo's "how to drop the amp"????

Sweets a poser, he obviously trying to sell endorsments.

I wonder how many fan's will actually try to copy that tone from the video.

Their 80's tones were the best imo.

I had an old 2 cycle Weed-Eater that pretty much nailed that tone.

love me some stryper, seen them tons since the soldiers tour... listen to Rocking The World off THWTD cd. Love these kinds of videos, not many guys will show you how to get their sounds.
