How to get tone like Ocean Avenue?

Chuggy pop punk sound. I have a jcm800 2203 and a squier strat. Should thicker strings be used to get this sound? Tips for amp settings/pedals would be appreciated.

You can get close, kinda

but this is a recto tone IIRC

gain at 7, BMT at 5-4-6, master until it "opens up" presence at 6

If that's not enough gain use an overdrive in front with the volume all the way up and the gain all the way down, tone knob at 5 or 6

I've been doing some fucking around with it, and i believe its definitely a recto on the recording for the intro

He might have layered some marshall over during the choruses, but those palm mute parts def sound recto

this is as close as i can get

That's the vintage/orange channel btw, not the modern/red

If i'm hearing it correctly, it's got a little more "flub" and woodiness in the recording which i associate with the orange
