Most recognizable guitar tones?

I love Jimmy Page....whole reason I picked up a guitar...and killer iconic tones. When he was on...wow...but damn I have listened to so many live recordings where it was just clam city. Genius in the studio and creative guru. Take away the copy cat stuff and it's still an amazing body of work. But he could fuck some shit up at times. lol....

I would've also included one of the Swedish Death Metal dudes. I don't know who was the first to use the HM-2? Entombed? Left Hand Path? Or was it before that?

Overall, that list isn't horrible. There's a few choices I can't say I agree with.

Also I think you have to consider Eric Johnson, Hetfield, Tosin, & Meshuggah. You pretty much know when you hear them, or someone trying hard to mimic their sound.
To me it’s a shakey list because of these you mentioned

It's a pretty weird article honestly.

What is tone in this context? It sounds like they're talking about playing style as much as the actual tone (inb4"toneisintehfingers").

The Edge has a very generic tone, but his use of delay is immediately identifiable... yet his delay isn't so much tone as it is part of the music he's composed.

Slash's tone in the studio and on stage is totally different - different guitars, different amps, different sounds. His studio sound is bright and edgy, almost to an extreme. His live sound is fat and warm, sometimes verging on muddy.

The lack of Hetfield is to me the most egregious exclusion, the man practically defined the "scoop mids and chug" sound of metal.

Here's a question: if you played an open A5 power chord through these guys' rigs and let it ring out, how many would you be able to pinpoint to the artist?

I think entombed. Is it the "Gothenburg" sound? Death and roll....love it....

No no. They were from Stockholm. Gothenburg is Melodic Death. At the Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity. Stockholm was heavier and edgier.

But then, yeah, Entombed went Death and Roll. Still killer, and I love it too.

Anyone who can't tell it is Yngwie playing the instant they hear the first note needs to be shot, how he doesn't make this list shows why ultimate guitar sucks hahaha

i mistakenly turned on a Yingwie song in one of the threads here the other day, Youtube must have saw that and thought i wanted to hear more, next thing i know im on the shitter and on comes a yngwee song as youtube is randomly playing stuff, i instantly said hell no and jumped off the toilet dirty ass and all to turn it off before the fast part that rattles my nerves into a bad mood. it was a close call

and you instantly knew it was him, hence why he probably should have been #2 on this list behind Dime hahaha

I'm not sure but on wang dang live was that Derrick playing the first half of the solo? After it builds to a crescendo and they play those power chords and the guitar comes in with the hammer ons....notice how bassy it is? I think that's actually when Ted comes in on his birdland. Hell my favorite pert is Derrick....if that's the case....I just always suspected that....Where's Carl? He would know.....
Yes and there’s video of it from that era also. I think around the 6 minute mark on the live album Nugent takes over. Hearing Teds spoken intro to that live version was pretty mind blowing at 12 yrs old lol
