The most underrated JCM 800 tone

I remember posts on Harmony Central where Tempesta was talking about having Roccaforte modding the old JCM800 he used.

Not sure what the other guy used, but could have been a 2000. These types of tones are why I am considering picking up a DSL100HR.

I have a TSL 2000 like the had on that tour . I have a lot of good amps and I still keep the TSL I have . It’s pretty solid

I need to learn to play this song. My first concert was KISS Hot in the Shade tour(1990?). Faster Pussycat opened and I had no clue who they were. Didn't care. I was focused on KISS. Anyway decades later... Damm I love them. Tone, attitude, killer riffs, grooves to keep ya movin'.

I recently acquired a DSL 100HR and am surprisingly impressed with it. The ultra gain channel green mode really nails that 80's mod Marshall high gain thing.

I still keep thinking about grabbing the DSL100HR or JVM, but I am leaning more towards DSL. From clips, it seems to be chunkier and more aggressive, where the JVM seems tighter and more compressed. I like the idea of more of the old school modded boosted 800 thing. I have a 2203 clone I play a lot with boosts, but something a notch up would be nice.

if more aggressive means "gain" as some feel it does...Then the JVM is the winner. If you mean a more raw and open voicing...Then you would prefer the DSL. And yes, the JVM410H is more compressed, smoother and a touch darker than the DSL 100HR. I would say that if a high gain, more traditional Marshall 80's hard rock or metal tone is what your after, then go with the DSL100HR. The DSL 100HR's Ultra Gain green mode with the the gain between noon and 2 o'clock nails this sound in my opinion. Also the DSL does better with a boost compared to the JVM. The classic gain red and ultra gain green with the gain backed off a bit both take a boost exceedingly well (similar to a JCM800). Based on your post, I think you would appreciate the DSL.

You probably have seen this, but below is a video of the DSL100HR being compared to a 2203 JCM800. He prefers the 800 (as he almost always does)...But they are VERY close and I actually like the DSL better here, straight in as well as boosted.

Definitely sounds like the DSL is more for me than the JVM. Yeah, I am mostly into late 80s / early 90s type thrash, and death metal tones when I think Marshall tones. Sounds from the standard Zakk No More Tears type tone, to Slayer, to Carcass, to Fear Factory, to Cannibal Corpse, to Morbid Angel, etc... I generally tend to prefer fatter sounding amps like 5150s and Rectos boosted for tightness over amps that are naturally surgical tight on their on, like a Mesa Mark. Too much gain is just smooth mush.

there is definitely a low-mid thickness available in the DSL 100HR that exceeds that of a JCM800 in my experience, particularly if your not afraid of that resonance dial (I run mine up at 2 o'clock). based on this post you will likely find yourself slamming a boost in front of the ultra-gain channel on either green or red with the gain around noon to 1 o'clock. the ultra gain on green with a boost is literally Slayer in a box.
