It's finally happened..... I've found an amp I'm going to be sticking with for a while!

After going through 6505's, a Randall Satan, an ENGL Fireball, an MI Megalith Beta, a Blackstar, Laney's, a Splawn Nitro, Mesa's etc. i've finally found an amp that works for me (tone wise the Fireball was my favourite). I received my ENGL Savage 120. Plugged her in, straight onto Channel 4, and with nothing more than turning the Volume down a bit i could tell already i'd be able to get the tone i was after.

Well, i started to have a bit of a fiddle, and with a twist of a few dials and the push of a few buttons, i was quickly getting the tone i wanted. Dialing in was easy, and with plenty of extra knobs like depth boosts, lead boosts, contour etc, you can really get the tone you want.

I play more metal than anything else, so tone wise I pretty much get what i want and don't mess with much more than that. Went through all the channels, and got some nice cleans, and some cool crunch tones. I'll have to have a bit more of a play with those channels when i get the chance.

Back to the 4th channel!

I like a tone with just enough bass and kick behind it to give it a full sounding, chest vibrating punch. I like my mids tight and punchy and my highs raspy and cranked. As a rough idea i'm running something like this (all o'clock):

Bass: 11
Mids: 1
Treble: 3
Presence: 3

As i said i like my Bass and mids to be tight and punchy, so not too thick or flubby, and i like my highs and presence up a little more, for a gainy, crunchy tone.

Every other amp i've played i've not been able to get that satisfaction with the highs while maintaining the lows and mids where i wanted them. I've found you either get a tighter sort of tone that can control the low end and mids, but can't get enough highs, or you crank the presence and treble and get that crunchier tone but the tone starts to 'flub out' and you loose clarity and tightness.

So far i'm thrilled with this amp, it's closest to my Fireball 60w (obviously), but has so much more in the tone. More versatility, more balls, more attack, more of everything.

I'm running it through my Vader 4x12, and it's absolutely crushing. Love to hear others input or opinion on the amp, and will try to give some more info after i've had a bit more of a play.

Thanks guys :) Certainly having a lot of fun with it. Be having some more fun when my new guitar arrives as well i think.

Great amp! Ran an early edition for 7 years. Sold it for a Steve Morse because I wanted something a little more organic. Ended up getting into Splawn's and Uber's. Now I'm looking to get back into the Savage again. Best low end of any amp I've owned for what I like to play. Narrowing down my search for another.

Enjoy it my man!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Certainly lives up to what i expected, which hasn't been the case for a lot of amps i've tried. Keen to really crank it and see how it holds up with a bit more volume. Generally i play at a 'loud' sort of house volume, but am so keen to blow some windows with it.

Congrats! I'm new to Engl amps, but I'm completely blown away by my Fireball 100. The clips I've heard of the Savage sound amazing as well. Enjoy that flamethrower!

I had an earlier model and I sold it to my buddy to fund a second run CCV that never happened and got a Gower Modded Killer Kali++ Marshall instead, which also slays!!! If he ever decides to sell it, I might jump on it. Killer amp!! Highly recommend especially for rip your head off metal!!!

Yeah the model name is definitely fitting. Savage is definitely what it is. I'm well chuffed with it.

Its so cool to find an amp that just fits...slows or stops the search for the 'right' amp. My 2C+ fits my needs, only amp I gas for is maybe a Wizard but I'd be saving up for it..2C+ stays. Grabbed a JCM 800 the other day, gotta have a Marshall in the stable...but it pales in comparison. Congrats on the new amp!

I agree!!! The Mark IIC+ is one killer amp!!! I kick myself for not buying a friend of mines back in the late 90's!!

Honestly i haven't given the Mesa's the time of day past Recto's. I know little about the 'Mark __" series, or the Road Kings or anything like that. Didn't quite find what i was after in the Recto's, and i just saw '$$$$$' looking at the rest of them, and figured for the price or less i can pick up just about any amp under the sun.
