I played a wizard once that Darrell supposedly used to thicken up his solid state tone on a couple of albums. Way huge tone when opened up. Was told he ran his blue MXR eq in front of it to goose it a bit. Really well built, heavy duty amp.

Its actually not really a bright control in a tone control kinda way, unless he changed what the control does. Not sure how the Bright works on the rhythm unless he put the diodes on that channel too. The original MC's didn't have it, but the Metal did. When I had my MC built I had the Bright put in on mine and a gain boost on the lead channel….

plus on my Metal there was a pull volume boost on the bass control where the bass boost used to be. That was nuts!

Jube, 68 Plexi, SLO, Bugera, Blades Firebolt, Marshall MG & a Wizard are all the same, only difference is price, i read that on Gear Sluts, which read it from Marshall forum, which got it from GAB, which saw it on TGP.

If its on the internet it must be true.

Hold-up! I wasn't hating at all. I want to know from someone who actually owns a Wizard. The layout reminds me of the old HIWATT amps, which have always been a personal favorite. I'm not digging the $4500.00 price tag, but that's life. I'm sure I can secure one used (some day) for a bit less.

the hard part is at the price they charge, not a lot of folks are going to experience them, unless on the used market (and then no telling if that amp is in it's true form). I myself had sworn off high dollar guitar amps after spending thousands of $$'s on amps that I just thought sounded average, or a cheaper amp sounded just as good. But once you get to play a Wizard, the character of these amps really satisfies.

No. The MCII is much more involved.

Don't be put off by modified hand-wired amplifiers. As long as the original transformers and controls remain, you can always rebuild them to factory specs. My RK was a fucking disaster inside! I don't know if it was messed with prior to me purchasing it, but I have rebuilt the circuit to OEM specs. I'm corresponding now with Martin Kidd on adding a choke to my RK. Martin came up with what he considers to be the best choke for the RK100 circuit, and is working on an optimal surface position for it. I'm keeping all receipts and emails, that way (should I ever decide to sell it), there will be a record of Martin's direct involvement in the modification.

Shipping an amp to Wizard is totally doable from the USA. As long as he is willing to inspect and rework whatever Wizard amp I get, I won't concern myself with originality.

Tons of R & D went into Wizard designs besides the usual bench stuff, like bringing them to studios and live stages, BEFORE they were ever released to the public. Most basement hacks who charge in the vicinity of what Wizard does, should take note of that, as that early R & D is very evident in the finished product.

Wizard Modern Classic
Q: Does anyone know what's the actual technical difference between a plexi 50w circuit and a wizard modern classic?
A: My Wizard modern was almost identical to the Marshall Jubilee series, with the same diode clipper circuit.

If this is true, would a new Marshall Jubilee not sound just as good as the Wizard MC? The Jubilee reissue is only $1800.00 vs $4000.00 for a Wizard MC. $1800.00 is doable!

Have you picked up a Wizard and looked at the guts? It's built way heavier than any other amp I have touched. Even the headshell has a heft and tank feel to it.

The lack of a top handle always made it a pain in the ass to carry though.

If you look at 3500 for a Friedman, SLO etc 4k for a Wizard is in the right price range, esp when many feel its the best of the best. Out of my range though....they do seem to hold their value pretty well used. Love to try one in person!
