Then we can have a real discussion.... I say this simply because yes impulses sound good/great but if the ear still prefers a real cab, then to me, that indicates that the real cab is still better. Just a fun challenge that I know you will be up to. Of course in a mix none of this matters because without a point of reference to compare, almost anything can be made to sound good. I just know i was able to tell when you were using a 57 and when you used a load or two notes etc..

Actually, the REAL way to do what you describe, for an acid test- is to set up a tone, with a great amp real greenback loaded 4-12", mic'd up, and record it- then, make an IR of the same mic/cab setup without changing anything, and record the same amp through the load and the IR you just made. Then compare clips.
I did this 3 or 4 years ago. I was pretty blown away by how close the IR was to the real cab, with all the other things remaining constant. I was shocked actually and in that moment i knew IR's were kinda the shit, the key, for recording great tones silently and quickly. And this was actually before I had the Suhr load, which really pulls it all into focus because it mimics the cab impedance curve so perfectly.

this one has a more natural top end and openess to the sound
the others are a little muted and congested to me in comparison to this one

Great point Pete. The only way to really A/B the difference, is to trick yourself or test yourself. Your own setup against an IR of that exact setup. I tried this but was unable to get the two notes capture software to work. I got a hollow sound almost like the mic was outside the room the cab was in. I don't find their setup picture that explanatory at all. I don't understand how the hell it is setup. If you can chyme in on how to set this up in simple man's terms, I'll giv'er a go and report back with soundclips. Then we'll do some blind testing..
If you look at the diagram below, what I am not understanding is the capture out side.. I captured it in and then I thought you save it and apply it as your IR. Is there a step I don't understand? Why am I then piping it back out to a power amp and back into the same cab? The fellas at twonotes haven't been very thorough here.. I was very surprised they didn't have a tutorial on this.

Perhaps another Internet war?
