I think the main difference is the Media has been a dying thing for a number of years now, so they are doing just about anything they can to stay "relevant". The ultimate clickbait is fear .. also social media has moved a long way since 2009 so the ability for those platforms to "influence" has grown massively

Growing up on a farm in the 70s we'd wipe our asses with corn cobs all the time when playing outside and shitting in the woods.

Then we'd toss 'em and the dogs thought it was time to play fetch. They'd grab a shit cob and run maybe 10 feet and it would drop out of their mouth. Other dogs liked eating poop so they'd chew on the damn things.
