I'd like to know too, I remember him saying he had the axefx copping his xtc classic to a T, then selling the xtc and now the axefx is gone, too?

Oh and for the OP, I find my xtc classic is the best amp overall for what I want as far as channel switchers go, though I haven't tried an anniversary xtc yet, afraid I may like it better, lol.

Went into a real love / hate thing with it... I actually still love it but found I was spending more time tweaking than playing. I found that rack gear is incredibly inconvenient. I'm not gigging so I dont need 386 presets. The Ultra was ultra overkill for me.

I should also say that I've owner nearly every amp in the sim database with the exception of the Dumbles and the CAE stuff (CAE was / is my favorite sim). My Aiken Intruder sat next to it and was a daily back and forth comparison. In the end I like my real amps better, I have zero use for any effects, I was also getting these extreme headaches after playing it for awhile. As far as "giving it a chance" goes - I'm unemployed at the moment and spent basically 45 days playing all day, everyday, hours on end trying every conceivable setup option. Everything started sounding the same after awhile, admittedly I probably burned myself out on it. My perspective was going back and forth between my real amps.

I will own one again, but next time around it will be a Standard powered by either an ART SL2A or a Verve powered monitor. For now I'm perfectly happy with my Aikens and my good old boring dry signal.

Pignose-Gorilla will be here end of this week...I would also take my Ecstasy Classic back in a heartbeat for simplicity sake.

The herbert is a excellent choice and would be the amp i would buy if i could only have 1 amp, i love the clean ch, ch2 is great for rock or metal and ch3 can do metal or leads. i also owned a xtc 101b and classic and still liked the herbert better, i tend to like compressed amps also.

some other nice choices are the einstein and roadtser. both have nice cleans and rock and metal tones.

I have had everything out there a few times. In my humble opinion the best channel switchers on the block are as follows:

1. Egnater MOD100 (not the Mod 50)
2. Soldano SLO100
3. Suhr PT100 (Have a custom white one on the way, played one in Canada and loved it).

I love the DIezel stuff as well but a little to high fi for me.

For straight clean tones you cant beat a Custom Shop Fender Vibro King. That with my pedal board can gig anywhere!

Similar story here, I was doing more tweaking with the Ultra, and kept thinking I could make it better with more tweaking...soon I was just tweaking for tweaking sake. Next time 'round will be the Standard for me too, unless there's a 1U amp/cab sim only pre-amp option, not a big effect user either. Happy with my dry sound, with a bit o' compression and 'verb - that's about it, and I'm luvin' it! Thanks for the info. and for taking the Pignose-Gorilla as the joke it was intended!

Back on topic, if I was doing metal these days, I think I'd be looking at Fortin (amp or mods) and Diezel. FWIW, haven't owned or tried them, but going by the clips and vids I've seen and heard...

Here's a cheap ($40 w/shipping) and simple add-on for the XTC that gives you both the pre and post 2004 sounds plus the Cameron mod. Uses a pre-existing unused hole in the rear of the chassis and is a simple 2-wire solder job.

The cameron mod opens up the Red channel.

I've got a SLO, XTC, Cameron Marshall, Two Rock, Uberschall... and one other amp I can't remember right now . Anyway, the Bad Cat kicks ass - the cleans are incredibly good, and the gain channel is like an ultra thick and complex Recto or Uber. Great amp that is very underrated.

I loved both amps, but for a hard rock/metal guy, I think you would really dig the Herbert. IMO, it's not as compressed as the XTC red channel, and it's tighter for the heavier styles of metal. Cleans on it are great too, just a killer amp all around.
