People with multiple EQ pedals: why don't you just buy gear that sounds good?

I’ve not always found the tone I’m searching for in conventional gear. At the same time using more than 1 pedal to get a core tone bugs me lol I’ve found some BossSD-1 mods that can get me anywhere I need to go out of that one pedal. Totally agree though, if I had to have an eq in front and the loop, I’d be reassessing my rig.

I know they have their uses but for me personally almost every time I tried running an EQ in the loop of an amp I felt it made my tone sound exaggerated and artificial. Not my thing

Using one up front as a boost is much better for me but even still I have straight up OD/boost pedals I'd prefer to use instead

I am overly anal about my tone, I just buy gear that sounds good

I guess this is a shortcut to find out everyone who has awful live tone on RT :hys:

Because literally every single person I have heard play live with 3+ eq pedals on their board had absolutely horrific guitar tone
Yeah, I know you're pretty particular about your tone. I know what I do and don't like but won't fret too much over the miniscule details. Either way 17 EQ pedals on your board isn't the way to achieve good tone.

We all know a chain of Boss Metal Zones is the way to godly tone. The only other acceptable option is a board the size of a small sedan. :ROFLMAO:

Absolutely AN eq can be a life saver in certain situations; or be very useful as a boost etc

But like.... if youre using three EQs as band aids for random frequencies on your board, at what point is that the sign that maybe your pickups, amp, speaker etc might not be suited for what you're trying to make them do?

This seems like putting band aids on a shotgun wound to me

NO FUCKIN WAY PUNK

FUCKIN WHAT FUCKIN WHAT LETS GOOOOO

I never thought I would be put in a situation where I would wanna defend Yngwie

but jesus christ man if there were a bunch of annoying drunk, high trailer trash kids shoving bags of donuts in my face i'd probably flip out too

May as well just forego an amp and plug all that shit in to a powered PA speaker

I'd probably say thanks and go eat a donut but I suppose if I was wearing a fringed purple suede jacket and stuff I wouldn't want powdered sugar getting on my duds.

An EQ boost for solos. An EQ for a lofi tone. There are many reasons to have multiple EQ pedals on a board. I personally don't have one on my board, but I'm not gonna pretend to know why someone might need them.

I use a Kemper for jamming out and occasional shows, but my tube rig is set up at home for recording and Madison Square Bedroom.
I usually only have 2 pedals out- a TS9 in front and a source audio eq in the loop.
The parametric eq can dial in the low end super tight and super huge at the same time- something no amp can do on its own. Sometimes I tweak a freq in the mid range or hi mids depending on the content. I could also go a few months with no eq in the loop, not a big thing, just something to sculpt when I wish. Also cool that it has a noise gate in there that I use from time to time. There's tuner in there too but I have no idea where that is lol

I would give you my super secret eq settings but it wouldn't apply to the eq naysayers here lol

I guess it's not a coincidence that I think all four of those dudes (as popular as they are) have awful tone and sound like shit :hys:

I do love randy's playing, but i hate his tone

I think you are conflating separate things here - yes, an eq pedal is great for a swiss army knife solution as a gigging player with backline. Neither I, nor anyone else is disputing that.

But when you get to the point where you have 4-6 EQs in your signal chain, at what point is it just that your gear doesn't sound very good?

While technically true, that is more of a function of how good you are at building the pedalboard. I've not moved a wire on my pedalboard for over a year and a half and it has never failed in probably 70-80 gigs :dunno: If the pedalboard is solid, with solid components, it's not hard to make it bulletproof.

But yes, you are correct that it becomes exponentially more likely with a gigantic 30 pedal board.

To some extent I agree, and partly disagree. I've certainly seen plenty of dudes with gigantic boards where it made no difference whatsoever, and they had half a dozen different overdrives for no reason and the audience had no idea.

But there are 1000% reasons to use a handful of effects, that the audience WILL notice. Using delay or wah the right way can push a lead guitarists solos into the territory where it becomes an entirely different instrument. Using some sort of wobble effect can fill up sonic space in a 3 piece or 4 piece band without a second guitarist, etc etc.

There's a million reasons to use effects pedals, it's just once you get to the "half dozen of the same type of pedal" level it seems like it would be obvious that you are getting diminishing returns..... well obvious to you and I anyways
Waitaminute....
You think Gilmour has awful tone and sounds like shit?
Really?

Yep, don't like his tone, think it's wildly overrated boomerslop

Pink Floyd is like boomer coldplay and the endless glazing makes me question legions of people's sanity
Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Have a good night Dan

Eqs rule . It’s way to make the amp how you want it . Not just accept it how it is. It’s like painting .
