Killer playing, Mr. Thorn.

Ok. I'm going to ask. You're an established pro. What was your budget on this solo project?

well... nada, really. Halfway through I seriously upgraded my studio, with new mic pres, a waaaay better computer/monitor, interface, etc. But some of the tracks were cut on an old Mac laptop and a Presonus interface.

Really, the idea was let's see what I can do for no dough. Just using what I already own and whatever skill I have.
Great stuff Pete! I look forward to checking out this CD when it's out.

I'm using a Presonus 8-in interface now and it sounds pretty good to me...did the expensive
pre's make that big of a difference?

I think the Presonus stuff is really good for the dough. I used a Firebox for a long time. But ya know... The API pres/converters are just... The shit haha. Very aggressive. The converters are even better to me then the apogee ones in my Ensemble. I was surprised how different they sounded- I tried the API pre into the ensemble, using the apogee converters, and the API converters with API pre just rocks- it's in your face. The apogee ones are big and more neutral. Still nice. But enough engineers just told me don't f-ck around, just get API and be done with it, so I did. The A2D unit really isn't crazy expensive, around $1700 I think

FINALLY... a guitar instrumental song that's not endless wanking, leaping hammer-ons from nowhere and mile long mixolydian legato.

Good shit man! That tune has some real character. You flash the skills here and there but you keep on the "I have something to say" path.

Thank you man! That's exactly what I'm going for.

Good preamps make all the difference. So many people wonder why their SM57 sounds like fuzzy crap straight into an Mbox. Try it through a nice $600 preamp and it sounds SO much better. Try it through a 1500 preamp, and it sounds like a different microphone altogether.

Ya you can think of this analogy- the mic is like a guitar pickup, and the preamp is the amp head. Different guitar amps sound radically different, and so do different mic pres!

Funny, I haven't upped the quality of my preamps all these years....yet I buy nice gear and have some nice mics (including a Neumann).
That is my next big buy this year, thanks for the advise.

That was pretty great...didn't sound way over my head like a lot of instrumental tracks do but sounded great and was interesting...cool!

Damn! Love it. How did you record it?

Matt V

just rockin at home, using my usual setup of a Bogner 1-12" in the closet, sm57 and Heil PR20, API pres/converters, and Logic 9.

Get the fuck out of here a 1x12 in the closet! Sounds killer Pete!

Thanks Andy! Really appreciate that dude. You rock!

Are you at NAMM this weekend? Let's hang if so.. Grab a drink.. Or we can hit that laser tag joint! Har Har :)

Wow Peter, your amp sounds great! Actually, YOU sound great! Seriously. Can I ask one question though -- was this track done with your iso-box closet (Bogner Cube setup), your Phantom V-Speaker, or just the old-fashioned way (mic'd cab)? Is this studio or home recorded? Either way, it sounds nice, the tone of the guitars, as well as the phrasing is very nice. Great effects too.

I tore the iso box out- but it's the same cab, in the same closet, just no box around it. It is surrounded by insulation stuff (702 panels) and packing blankets and some auralex.

The cab is a Bogner 1-12", with a Scum M75 65 watt speaker.

Here's the cab, I had to move it today to put a 2-12" in there to do something else, so I took pics of the mics first:

The sounds on "Perplexed" are almost all the 57. As u can see, dead center. The Heil i used on one of the rhythm tracks, and on the guitar in the breakdown section. Into API pres and API converters.
