It was meant as nothing more than a point of discussion on a completely subjective topic. We come here to share opinions and the article was an op-ed. How is this any different than talking about musical tastes and amp/effect preferences?

Isn't a sharing of opinions exactly what we are doing in this thread? What were you looking for, 73 people to say "I agree rupe"? That would be a kick ass thread.

And calling someone a poseur because they have a differing opinion on a "completely subjective topic" is certainly a way to piss people off. I don't like being called a poseur. I never did even when I had an 80's Hollywood look and the guys in heavy bands would call me a pussy or a fag or a poseur. A poseur wouldn't have been able to rip many or most of them a new ass on guitar. A "fag" wouldn't have spent so much time chasing girls in his bands crowd. A crowd that actually contained lots of females.

I understand completely someone not digging a relic look. Personally, I am bored by guitars that look like they just came off the shelf. But if some guy with a brand new, never a fingerprint on it, guitar comes out and HE kicks ass on that guitar, I would be an idiot to dismiss him as a guitar polishing, concours de elegance loving, cookie cutter guitar, case queen player. I judge a guitarist on how he plays guitar, not what kind of guitar he plays. When people start judging a player on his taste in guitar finishes and throwing out the word poseur, I think that shows a mentality that is begging for a verbal bitch slap. I made an attempt at it.

Wow...you're reading far more into this than I ever meant to invoke. Chill The opinion part is cool...the bashing of other's opinions and the "who cares?" comments are what I'm referring to. And I never called anybody a poser...in fact I asked a question as opposed to making a statement to try and keep it respectful and conversational. Obviously its somewhat of a divisive subject...thought it could be fun to bash around a bit, until the itchy pussy crew showed up.

And I don't even mind the look when it's either earned or done well. My "issue" is with a certain faction (you've seen them being in music retail) that tries to buy credibility rather than earn it...the right hair, clothes, boots, etc and the hippest gear but can't play anything outside of barre chords and the minor pentatonic box.

Let them try to spend their way to credibility. It keeps the economy churning. In the meantime, they're facade will be revealed as soon as they plug in their guitar. You can't buy musical credibility. Many have tried and failed miserably.

This..poseurs back in the 80's were the guys who had the full Marshall stack, 2 or 3 nice guitars, long hair and the outfits..but couldn't play for shit. But they got into bands because they looked the part, even though they could barely play bar chords.

Growing up in the 80's this was exactly what I was thinking when I read Steve's post.

Some of you guys are going to DefCon 4 just because people don't like something you do.

Funny how some love typing their opinions but when they read something they don't agree with they turn around and say you shouldn't have any opinion interesting double standard.

All I'm saying is, we all have opinions, it's just amazing that people can get so bent out of shape in either direction. Clear enough?

But I have to ask... Who cares. You can't buy MUSICAL credibility with hair, clothes, boots and gear. The only thing you get is the credibility of being a trendy collector. You'll be exposed as soon as you post your first clip (if you dare). And I'll add that if you just dig looking like a rocker and owning the coolest gear, even though you can barely play, i see nothing wrong with that. Do whatever makes you happy. Life is difficult and if you are more pleasant when I encounter you because you spent the evening looking at all your cool gear, all the better. Everybody wins. Yay!!!

I just think that the act of deliberately damaging a perfectly good guitar with the aim of deluding people into thinking that it has seen the world, or that the player is some sort of off-the-rails Pete Townsend & doesn't need a pristine musical instrument to sound good, is contrived, deceitful & pretentious.

I certainly wouldn't pay a professional to do it for me. But hey. To each his own I guess.

If you want to go there then you should consider that in many/most musical genres the entire act of the performance is contrived, deceitful and pretentious.

First of all, my response was not condescending in the least, so I have no idea what you mean there. Second, I'm genuinely interested. Why do YOU care about people who can't play but dress the part and buy expensive relic'd gear that they didn't "earn"? What credibility do they get as musicians by doing it that you say you have a problem with? I'm interested in why you care...

If you can't understand what's condescending about telling someone "who cares?" in response to something they've said, I don't think anything else I could say would help you figure it out. I mean seriously, you're not a dummy...you don't see it? And that's not to say how you actually meant it...I don't believe you said it to be mean-spirited.

Beyond that, I don't truly care about any of this to any great degree...once again it was simply a topic of conversation. I'm not sure how most people operate on an internet forum, but I don't take time to think through everything that I might post and decide if its worthy of discussion and/or analysis. Are there certain traits that some people have that you find annoying? That's where I was coming from...nothing more...I never intended to dive too deep with this one.
