Review: Van Halen – A Different Kind Of Truth

All I can say is I had a blast on the way home last night and to work this morning. I got work inspired to play, picked up the acoustic, and proceeded to capture the total opposite of the energy I felt on the way in. Just like the old days.

This cd has made me want to play and that in itself is well worth the money I'm going to give to VH for their goods and magazines for interviews. I'm not buying a $80 shirt though. They can suck it.

It's been a long time. If you don't like it, it's cool, I'm just glad I'm not you.

What amazes me about these threads is God forbid if anyone says anything that goes against the grain or is deemed negative or God Forbid that one expresses their opinion. The last time I checked, THIS WAS A DISCUSSION FORUM WHERE PEOPLE WILL EPXRESS/ DISCUSS THEIR OPINION.

I really understand what you are saying. Yeah it's all just opinion and I no where take it personal even if I respond to a negative comment. It is sometimes very confusing to me what people are expecting or listening for. I get it that it's not something they are getting into but to say things like it sucks??? I mean my god if what VH put out on this disc sucks then I wish I sucked that bad.

The engineer of the album should be fucking shot though, 13 year olds with PODs are getting better EVH than EVH.

Feel free to post up clips of your engineering skills. I'm assuming your over 13 and surely have something better than a POD.

Music is what makes us all individuals. I'm glad not everyone likes what I like and vice versa.

For instance, I am a Christian and cannot stand "mainstream" Christian music. Yes, the message is what it's about and I respect it. But the delivery is SO....drab. So vanilla. Whiny male falsetto vocals where guys sound like they are on the verge of tears, boring, overproduced guitar tones. Where is the edge? Where is the heart? Where is the raw factor? But I digress...

I don't dislike it, but I don't love it. I think it's a good effort for guys pushing 60...

I think the band is definitely playing good and making the best of it... but after listening to VH since the early 80's I am pretty much Vh'd out...

The disc is actually much better than i thought it would be and may buy it just to have in the dlr/vh collection

I see this on every forum I frequent to varying degrees some more than others.

I think part of it is that people become invested in someone/something so much they take negative comments as a personal affront to who they are. And when that happens you get forum fireworks.

I like to read both sides, and not everyone marching lockstep in formation on gear/bands/people/other topics.

Here it is, 2012, and I was able to listen to a new album of pretty cool tunes done by Van Halen...a band that I was digging well over 30 years ago. WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE???!!! Sure I could nitpick it a bit (guitar tones, squeaky clean production, etc) but why bother...this album kicks a much greater amount of ass than I could have hoped for. It's a fun album and Eddie sounds like he's refueled the tank and is ready to take another climb back to the top of the rock guitar heap. I give it

That's what Spotify is for.

I was a HUGE VH fan, from the time I could remember listening to my older sister's LP's of VH, II, etc up until Balance. Yes, even the Van Hagar years. After that though, I just lost the faith.

I was actually one week from getting a VH tattoo (same as Ed's) when VHIII came out. Wow, was that a close call. It showed that getting a band logo tattoo is a BAD idea, no matter how much you think you love the music.

Maybe I'm more cynical because I honestly like the 5150/F.U.C.K./Balance era better than DLR stuff anyway, so this doesn't excite me as much as it would if Sammy came back. That may be sacrilege here, but it's just me.

I'll definitely still check it out, but I'm grateful that modern technology allows us to do so without having to necessarily buy it. Nothing can match the disappoint of dropping two overpriced coffee's worth of money on VHIII, only to use it as a coaster. If it turns out to be good, I'll buy it.
