I just found out today that I'm about 25% below the latest official poverty line here in Oz.
Never availed myself of any free food even 'though I've had to skip 22 000 meals since the mid '90s (I just worked it out).
Point being that it kinda disgusts me that so many peeps over there use stamps and whatnot to buy crap. Wish I could afford to buy crap, although it's prolly a good thing that I can't; I love it too-much.
Also prolly worth saying that had I not been trying to save for music gear these past 30 years, I'd likely have been to restaurants, movies, bought crap food and been able to run the heating in winter. The things we do for our art.![]()
Yup. I've seen the stories from the US.
Seems there's an epidemic there of illegals and "poor" people screwing the system for every dollar they can get.
Naw, not everyone. If you own your home they'll tell you to kick rocks on the food stamps. If you go to vegas and gamble your home away like an irresponsible idiot, you can get EBT and what not.Apparently literally anyone can get them and it's incredibly easy![]()

Eastern Washington is affordable, I've looked many times. Actually, most of the USA has areas that are affordable but the areas won't be premium areas. I was noting how entitled young people expect 400-500k "starter" homes in nice neighborhoods with great schools as their first home. Completely unrealistic. Anyways, some bozo challenged me to "find something less than 150k that wasn't in the rust belt" so I linked him a nice house in Clarksdale MS for $75k and....of course he bitched about the area. So it's less a matter of affordability and more a matter of spoiled bitch ass youths IMO.Just so we're clear, I don't know how much houses cost there, but you would be lucky to purchase a 600sqft shack made out of literal cow dung for half a million dollars here in washington state, so that doesn't really have the same rhetorical effect![]()

https://www.trulia.com/home/915-orondo-ave-wenatchee-wa-98801-85968917There literally hasn't been ANY home under 400k in wenatchee for years now. It's a whole regional joke with a meme facebook page and everything.
I could be wrong but I doubt it if you own the home outright and aren't needing to be making payments. Somehow in their gov eyes people in that situation are impervious to financially difficult times. In fact, i'm pretty sure as long as your mortgage is a certain percentage of your income, at least in washington you would be able to get EBT/SNAP just fine
