haha. no worries, thanks.

basically, the Herbert has almost exactly the sound I'm after, although I wish you could boost the mids a little more. However, I just can't afford it right now, even used (I'm simultaneously saving up for a two month trip to China in the fall). second place goes to the Engl Powerball II, I was trying to sell some gear to pick the one up in the classifieds, but it sold before I could grab it. Was considering the Powerball I that feraledge has for sale, but I think I'd like to hold out for a II. Rivera Knucklehead K Tre is a pretty close 3rd to the powerball. was on my way to pick one up tonight (an hour's drive), and like I said above, dude sold it to someone else. The only real wild card is the Mesa. I've played a few I hated (with Gibson LP's and passive pickups) and one I loved (with a Schecter 7 string with EMG actives).

Meanwhile, I talked to Kyle from Rhodes about going down to his shop and checking out the Colossus. overtime work schedules and traveling for shows with my old band has made that a difficult thing to schedule, so I'm planning on checking out his stuff at the Chicago Beer and Gear. In the meantime, I'm keeping an eye out for a K-Tre or Powerball II. If the Colossus wows me, then I'll likely spring for it, as supporting a small operation in my neck of the woods is pretty appealing. If for some reason I come into a wad of dispensable cash soon, then I will happily spring for the Herbert and not look back (although I'll probably get a Powerball as well at some point). If I get desperate or antsy (which is likely), I'll grab that Framus or a Mesa.

enough about me, how are you guys doin? :D ;)

ok, last group question: unrelated to what I've said so far, what amp would you go for if you were after this sound?

also, here's why youtube clips are useless. i know that a herbert doesnt sound like an Engl, but here they are almost indistinguishable.

I ended up with Mesa Roadster, trying to save money basically. Jury's out, but I spend a fair amount of time wishing I had an Engl.

hm. i'm not sure. i'd really prefer to just plug in and play through an amp with little to no pedals.

also: thoughts on framus cobra? there's one for sale closer to my price range...

A cheap power amp or solid state clean amp and wet/dry your amp is one idea.

Width and that 3D sound comes from slightly dissimilar tones. Think how a micro pitch shifter works.

One amp and a few pedals will not get you a quad tracked W/D/W tone.

Just my opinion but any other metal amp with a different midrange focus will work in a simple stereo rig. A Mesa lower mid focus with a Marshally upper mid gives a wide sound.

If you can take an ABY box to a patient music store and try some experimenting you will find something.

Good luck on the tone quest.

Bogner Uberschall Rev 2
Herbert
K Tre
Also Peters amps have always impressed me with their ability to sound heavy and clear
Fortin makes wicked stuff
Check out a FJA metl mod 5150 for something heavy but not so common

Actually been thinking this might be the way to go. A friend of mine plays two jcm800's with dif settings and two very different cabs and it's pretty dimensional. Likewise with another friend and two different mesas.

Don't rule out using a very clean amp blended with a distorted amp. This creates a layered sound with depth and adds dimension and definition.
