Hey, just a quick blast from the past - as in a few posts up... Someone mentioned the Mako Mak4, and this - THIS - is an option you gotta check out for sure. I can't believe I gapped out and completely neglected to mention this one as well, so mega props to 'ibenhad' for bringing this one to the surface. The Dorado channel is probably one of the meanest, nastiest, most cutting hi-gain tones I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. It's searing hot man, cuts like a knife, and these preamps are going for less than a kilobuck!!! MONEY WELL SPENT.

Peace,
Mojo [/quote]

Thanks Mojo. The MAKO is pretty damn awesome. I may move mine if I get the right offer in $$$ or trade..

Im going to go out on a limb and recommend something not many would. Bruce Egnater designed it, and Randall built it. They only made ~ 1000 in the entire world so there are not many to go around, but it sounds exactly like what you're going for. Price wise they do not decrease in value, $800 is reasonable and 600 is a steal, 1000 is not uncommon but there are better deals.

Randall X2 Warhead. Stick a parametric EQ as a mid boost in the loop and you've got one hell of a 3d sound that will more than cover the material you're looking for and still 1/4 the price of a herbert.

i currently have three of the X2 heads and two warhead stacks. great tone, but i would not advise getting one because of reliability issues.

if you want a real 3D type of sound, plug ANY amp into an ISP vector guitar sub, then into your cab.

solved. seriously.

regarding Mako Mak4...

yes, don't rule out preamps/power amps...I'm back to rack. Two Notes Torpedo will let you use your preamp/poweramp or head for direct or recording...I have Two Notes torpedo CAB on order for my G-System/TriAxis direct rig. I can also use it with my other preamps without need for a power amp in an FRFR rig.

edit: Two Notes has a manufacturer forum here too, and they are actively responding. I think a few here have the new rack Live or older units.

thanks, i will look into those preamps.

Played a Framus Cobra and a Splawn Nitro tonight, the Splawn sounded really good but not what I'm after, not enough saturation in the gain. The Framus was much closer. with certain settings it sounded pretty great, and the deep control was pretty right on, some really kicking bass depth. only thing that really bothered me was that the gain seemed to have a tendency to get fizzy really fast with the presence control set anywhere past noon.

search continues...

Boutique amps: the options just keep coming. That chimera sounds good. Is the jury still out on whether Fortin is still making amps?

Prices on the peters aren't so bad, especially considering the options available. Thanks.

5150 won't have the ass but a great amp

well that rules THAT out. gotta have great ass with that amp

The 5150 does have that bottom when you use the resonance control.

Gary

Rivera didn't sound so good after the framus... Getting narrower.

Make sure you try the Fender version also.

Herbert without a doubt. It cuts fine if dialed in right. My perfect amp!

i know. i want the Herbert, but even used at 2600 (plus tax equals just under $3k), it's just too high for me right now.

ok, opinions: Framus Cobra local for $1300 OR Engl Powerball v.1 for $1300 plus shipping? haven't played a Powerball myself, yet, so hard to know. but it sounds great on the ola englund clip. I liked the Framus, altho it did get fizzy fast. I was playing it through v30's, which according to forum nerds enhances the fizz.

Mako Mak4, don't lose sight of it, just sayin'....

yeah, i'd really like to try one.
There's gotta be some cats in Chicago who've got one man... I'd say even consider hittin' a used one up out of the classifieds and/or CL or ePay. You can run 'em through the back end of any amp - get you started anyway. Have you checked out the YT clips on these preamps? FRPC does a bang up job, and this isn't the latest iteration. FWIW, I got the new model, went apeshit on tone-testing with a variety of different glass, got it the way I wanted it, and it STAYS now!! :worship: :salute:

Check it out:

yeah, not a one on CL or ebay that I can find. the yt vids i've heard sound good, but i'm reluctant to buy something sight unseen based on compressed internet vids
