Searching for a 3d super high gain head

played the Herbert again today, as well as an Engl Fireball and Powerball II, and a Twin Jet. no longer interested in the Framus. Both the Engl's sounded so much better I kind of don't even see the point of thinking about the Framus at all. But am now stuck between the Powerball and the the Herbert. I think overall, the Powerball sounded better, way better articulation and clarity, and just a really freaking nice tone, more organic/less processed sounding than the Herbert (but not nearly as organic sounding as the Uberschall imo), and the mids really help with the overall tone, and the cutting-through aspect. problem is, for the one thing I want to do, the Herbert f*cking destroys. I don't care so much for the other two channels, especially compared to the Engls, but that one channel just KILLS. there's next to no articulation, and the midrange kind of almost isn't there even without engaging the mid cut (altho we tried putting the intensity to 0, and the level to like 3 oclock, and it actually acted as a midboost, which helped), but I've never heard anything so pummeling and evil and eviscerating in all my life. and the bass power OMFG. playing the amp with the master on about 2.5 actually gave me a stomach ache like I just watched a car wreck. There's no question that the Herbert gain channel is THE sound I want for this project. I just can't get over the price (used it's more than a new Powerball, and I found a couple used Powerball v1 for around 1300, which is about half the price of a used Herbert), and the fact that it's 180 watts, which is WAY more than I need at this point. Will likely pick up a Powerball and fiend for the Herbert. Wish I could afford both.

basically I have to decide if I want pure evil or a more broadly usable, less compressed/more dynamic gain sound. i pretty much already know the answer to that.

by "organic" and "less compressed" i mean with the spectrum of crazy high gain amps, btw. obviously not compared to the spectrum of all amps.

the guy that was helping me at the shop compared listening to a herbert on Channel three with the gain at 3 o'clock and the depth at 3 o'clock to "getting the shit beat out of you by an amp."

Just experienced a total revelation. Previously had only played Mesa dual rectos with lp's with standard Gibson pickups. Just played a multi-watt with a Schecter Damien 7-elite with emg actives, and holy shit, that thing sounded great. May have found my solution for around 1k, rather than the 2.5k for a used Herbert. And the damien 7 was a surprisingly good guitar for under 600. Rather pleased with my finding today. \m/. .\m/

There is a used 2012 Powerball II in the classifieds here from a very reliable seller for $1500. I've never even play an Engl but I'm half tempted.

i played the Engl Powerball II and short of a Herbert, it's pretty dead on what I'm after. I'm considering it. only thing is I can get a mesa for around $800 at a used shop here, and i'm kind of a penny pincher. should probably kick that habit, I always end up settling for less and then being unhappy with it and selling it.

Based on that, I'd try a 2 Ch Triple Recto. I'd think you would like it even more.
I modded mine to "pre 500" specs and it slays everything I have played before and after it :D  :gethim:

It's the first run of the dual rectifiers back from 92' (revision C through D)
They are tighter, clearer, meatier and have more drive, aggression and gain than the later revisions of the recto series.
The best version of the dual recto according to a lot of folks, just a flat out mean beast. :D

Or just find a Revision F with the Mark III trannies and you'll be just fine.

thanks for the vote. haven't heard much positive about that amp on here yet.

Yeah it's deff a hard hitting amp. makes alot of other amps sound like toys. It's serious.

It certainly sounded good at reasonable GC volumes with dimarzio d activators. A few of the GC employees came into the just to see what I was playing. Just haven't hear much about them.

Side note: a couple months ago, I was at GC playing a '65 fender pro reverb with a les Paul, had the thing cranked pretty hard, and this GC employee comes in and says, "MAN what fuzz pedal are you using, that sounds great!"

dude sold the rivera out from under me while I was on my way out there... :gethim:

Go on ToneFinder.com and look up Titan. Tons of tones in that amp. I think you could get something around what you are going for with that. If you are wanting something quick though then that won't work. I think there might be one in the classifieds though. Tons of different suggestions already. Just thought I'd give a different suggestion. Something like this maybe:
idk....

btw sorry if you already made up your mind. There was a lot to read here
