It depends how loud you can play it IMO. The PPIMV sounds good at medium levels, but not at lower leveled stuff. It craps the NFB, which is - for me - a huge part of the Marshall-ness.

This was recorded so low with my PPIMV I had to completely crank my mic pre to get a signal to record. Beyond bedroom low volume... Sounds pretty Marshally, no?

Sounds very cool Steve.

Some of the typical mid-higher frqu. are caused by the PM circuitry of course - and my guess is that you've used GBs, right?. I had probs with (tried most PPIMV variants in a 1970 Superbass with 22nF PI caps) the bass/bottom and its flubbyness - and I've used less treble but more presence.

Actually, this PM was put to stock 2203 preamp specs. I used a Mojave 4x12 with H30s (my favorite!).

That sounded dope for low volume.

For how low the volume was I was pretty surprised how decent it sounded to tell the truth...

I can tell you that I'm also surprised, esp. about the 2203 circuitry in a PM - blasphemy :D

Its definitely one of the best PPIMV clips I've heard, Steve.

Complete and utter blasphemy! I've actually been banned from the Mojave User's Group over this...

Coming from you that is high praise... Much appreciated.

I really enjoy Savage's Marshall clips and you can also use Lynch's Under Lock and Key for a reference.

Thanks!

Just for reference, mine is a 1981 2203 JMP. I believe it came stock with 6550's but I'm running EL34's.

I'm pretty sure Digi would like this amp quite a bit. I certainly enjoyed playing through it...

Ok so the early 70s JMP looks like this.......

72%20jmp%20s.jpg

Later year JMP looks like this........

1979%20marshall%20jmp%20amp%20s.jpg

What is the difference between them? I take it these are both NMV as well right?
The early one has a volume for each set of inputs, the later one is a master volume, MK2 I believe. Both are superb, the later ones are easier to find, the early ones always sounded fatter and smoother to me, Not totally sure, but I think the early ones had EL-34's The later ones were shipped with 6550's always thought they were a little more mechanical sounding , tight and crunchy. Just my 2 cents = Jim

Thanks Bob. Did Doug change anything or just a tune up? IMO your JMP clips were my favorite from you, that higher mid sizzle rules!

Yeah Steve, I KNOW I would dig that amp

Ok Ralph, Chub, or any other LeTekro freak, what is he using on Seven Seas?? Can an earlier NMV JMP get me there?

Christ the harmonic at 1:30 is insane
Id use a 70's 2203 w 6550's and an SD-1 and a wah stuck in the middle....it got me there anyway.....when I saw him he was using a channel switching JCM 800....a stock NMV will not get that tone.

Just a note to all forumites: I have 75' JMP 50W mk2 (originally non master) but years ago its modded to 4 gain stages. Easily reversed back to stock if wanted. I could change that to a guitar too.

Scott, welcome to the real world

It´s been said before, early 70s JMP, will get you there with a Hotplate. My 50w JMP Bass has killer cleans and crunches superb. A 4x12 with GBs will make it a killer package!

Yeah George, I am thinking that I want something between 1977 and 1979 JMP 100 watter but still need to research 4 holers. Perfect world I would buy both :D

...if you lived closer you could borrow one of my Marshalls for a few weeks.

Thanks Dave, that would make things way earier. I dont want to buy something and have it not be what I want or have to cut it up too much, I wish I knew about Randy's Super Trem earlier

Side note I already told the wife the next gathering I dont care if the Pope will be at my house I will hit the next ampfest.

Jmp's are great amps...and will do exactly what you want. JCM 800 2203 will give you what you need for crunch...but there are no clean tones in that amp. How about a JCM 900 SLX or JCM 800 2205?

I had a 2205 and a 2204 at the same time. Calling what the 2205 had a clean is a recipe for disappointment IMO. The "normal" channel could sound similar to the 2204, but not as fat. The "lead" channel picked up from there. I ended up selling the 2205, because I could get a better "clean" by rolling back on the volume knob w/ the 2204, and the gain sounded better.
