Although you could try a vht deliverance...I set mine up so it sounds very close to the slo I had...couple are for sale here in the classifieds. You won't get better tone for around 1k...great amps.

Would love to see a head to head clip with the deliverance and slo. Never heard of these two amps being compared...

If Bogner, Diezel, SLO is out of your price range, so is a pre 500 dual recto. Going rate on a blackface rev C or D is basically $2500+ now. I've been keeping pretty close tabs on a few that have sold lately.

That's the one. Very similar. Listen, I'm the first to say the SLO is a great amp, best I've had. Wish I didn't sell the one I had a few months ago, but a $700 D60 is a very good amp that has some similarities to the slo in articulation and bloom. Dry yes but to a degree so is an slo. If you can't save the cash for a used slo a D60 does a good impression. Good luck!

The consensus with the SLO was that it had to be cranked way up to sound great. I think the Deliverance sounds better with the volume at 10 o'clock, but it was at 2 o'clock for the recording.
To the OP: the Mesas sound nothing like a SLO. Mesas are totally mushy compared to the Soldano. I didn't think that the stock Peavey at the ampfest sounded good at all, although the recording isn't bad. Nothing really sounds like a Soldano, but the Deliverance would be a good choice for less money. Money being no object, I wouldnt trade my Deliverance for a SLO. The Bogner Uberschall is a really good choice, too.

Have you looked at the Avenger? It lists for less than half the price of the SLO and you already have a clean channel if you have a Mark. Plus, there is a 50 watter, the 100W SLO is retardedly loud.

From Soldano:

The 100 watt AVENGER offers pure SOLDANO overdrive tone. Period. If you want the overdrive of the legendary SLO 100, and that’s all you want, this is a great amp for you. Plugging into the High input jack accesses the full gain of this true rock ‘n’ roll amplifier. The Low input bypasses the first gain stage for a cleaner, more vintage crunch

I would look at it before the Hot Rod for SLO tones.

I had the Avenger 100 with DeYoung transformers and my HR100+ sounded closer to the SLO's than the Avenger did .
The Avenger amps have an edgy modern tone to them , and slightly darker than the SLO or HR+ amps.
IMHO the SLO mojo comes from the some of ALL parts used in the circuit and DeYoung iron .

Really? That's interesting. I've never owned either, was just basing it off the web site and the fact that I had heard the Avenger was the SLO lead channel (in ckt terms) built as a one channel amp.

I guess it makes sense... I've sort of learned the hard way that you save money in the long run by saving up and getting the thing you REALLY want rather than trying to cheap out and get something else and then try to spend a lot of time money and effort to turn the cheap thing into something it is not. It just ends up being an expensive setback on your road to saving up and getting the other thing eventually.

Have I mentioned how much I am loving this thread I did find a dual rec rev F for 950 I may go with that and wait on the Slo

I don't know your budget, and I don't want to start the "Who's your favorite modder".. But Jerry at FJA does amazing things to 5150/6505s and with a stupid fast turn around. I had him do one for me and I miss it dearly.

It never failed and sounded as good recorded as it did live. I liked it much more than my Dual rec I had with the Platinum mod from voodoo.

check his stuff out here.

In no way am I saying the fja modded 5150 "was" a slo, but itwas hands down better than stock and still one of my favorite tones.

a jcm-800 with a voltage sag added to the power supple would be nice the sag gives nice fuzz old school marshall that sag would sound nice on a slo preamp
