I used to struggle with the same so i started doing theory and it helps. Im not there yet but its a journey. With the theory i know now i have so much more options compared to lets say 2 years ago. Now i also look at riffs and progressions in a different way. Though i havent been busy with metal these past two years i still love it. I recently started doing work on my technique again so im mixing metal when doing technique work and jazz when working on chords, arps, progressions/cycles.
Simply put, i had the same problem (harmony), where can i go with this riff/progression. I wanted to work on it, i found out it was lack of knowledge. Now i know so much more, i just started applying it all and this part takes much more time but its so much fun.
I also found that so many songs have the same notes in riffs, same chord progression. Where the difference lies is the rhythm. Im also working on this.
