QR is a great amp, but depending on the year, need some pretty good volume to sound their best.

Check out Curt (Chubtone) tearing up a QR!

I was just offered a Super Sport for the Archon I'm selling/trading but have no experience with Splawns. Will the Super Sport get me into modern metal like say Deftones, Meshuggah, Periphery territory? Judging by the comments, the QR sounds like a contender as well.

I would say no. I had a super sport and I did not like it. It was more of a classic rock kind of amp. It has shared channels that I could not get sorted out. It's a 6V6 amp. I found it to have a looser bottom end and a bit more mid scooped and much more polite sounding than the Quick Rod.

Agreed. The Archon boosted with a TS type will fare better. I need to try an Archon in person. Only ever used Kemper or Helix versions.

I found an old clip of my Super Sport. It's not a bad sounding amp, standard Marshall tone.

I think with an EQ in the loop, and the right boost, anything's possible.

I played thrash and death metal on a Peavey Classic 30 for crying out loud. MXR 10-band in the loop, Wylde OD in front, plugged into a 4x12, you'd be surprised.

That said, I do prefer bigger bottles. I think the SS will do it, however, and still a step up from the Archon, tonally speaking.

Every time I see a thread about spleen amps it gets my gas going. I’ve never seen one locally, or played one but I have always wanted one. So yeah thanks for giving me gas :)

I've owned a few Splawns. My favorite was a QR with KT88s. It had the B+ or normal switch on it too. I preferred it in non-B+ mode. That amp smoked the el34 QR B+ I had and my el34 & Kt88 Nitros. I only sold that amp because my Fryette did all the QR could do an more.
Yeah my Sig: X cops most of the tones I like in my QR too. It's crazy but I have been a VHT guy for about 10 years now and when I first got my QR, I noticed they "felt" very similar. Had my QR since 2013 when I ordered it new. It just recently sold.

my older 3 pre Splawn Pro Mod (6550's) definitely has a lot of the same attributes of the Sig X I had that made me love it. Having said that the Splawn is WAAAAYYY more in the Marshall camp and I feel it's easier to play. I think the lead tones out of the Splawn are a bit better but the Fryette was way better for clean stuff and it's dynamics/touch sensitivity are unlike anything i've owned. Just something special about the Splawn. Like some of the other guys I've had a lot of cool amps over the years but none of them are better than the Splawn just different.

Considering the quality of the amp at the price point that Scott is able to deliver them, I honestly feel like its hard to beat a Spawn. His quality is on par with Suhr and Friedman, and he can deliver it at half the cost. If you like his take on a hot rodded Marshall tone, then its a no brainer. And that's not meant to slight Suhr or Friedman.

I’m selling my Pro Stock B+ 2015. Pm me and we can chat if you’re interested.

How times change. Just a few years ago whenever someone said Splawn someone said "weird mids". I always thought they sounded good.

  I had an older Nitro that I always thought had "weird mids". Didn't sound at all like the clips of other Splawns I heard before I bought it.

Well tomorrow i will order the Quick Rod with White Tolex Thanks for all the info and clips.

White tolex is whatsup. If you play out a lot it's super easy to get it dirty looking though. The scuffs show up easily.

I had a Nitro. I'd buy another one in a second. The clean channel was as well killer on that amp.

get a used super sport & slave it thru the recto's power amp

especially if your leaning toward a QR - IMO the SS has similiar tones, 22watts, and usually a
lot cheaper used

It is the EL34 version.

I’ve got two of them , one of them started life with 6v6s and I had it converted to EL34s last year and it’s really ballsy now with more volume on tap. I plays 80s hard rock high gain stuff with them

Yeah I never got that. I think the mids are perfect. Especially if youre gigging. The QR can cut through a live mix like nobody’s business.

I remember watching Rian's vids with a Splawn and it sounded so punchy, great tones, no flub. That dude can make gear sound good though. Either way, when I saw Godsmack live they rolled out Splawn stacks. Roaring show
