Splawn Amps

How times change. Just a few years ago whenever someone said Splawn someone said "weird mids". I always thought they sounded good.

Are we sure that the weird mids didn't have to do with forum shills and whatnot? I seem to remember something like that

I would assume this is how that started. I love my Splawn. If you play live, it’s a dream amp.

Yes it is. Cuts like a hot knife through butter in a band/live setting. Bedroom players crying "wierd mids."

The whole "weird mids" thing is bs....Splawn amps are tone machines, don't agree with the "stiff" feel either, though I was using a StreetRod(awesome), very fun/easy amp to play...now if they would only update that tone sucking effects loop I might have kept mine.

I think a lot of people make the mistake of judging amps off their solo'd tone when really the real test is how they sit in a mix. It's like people complaining an amp doesn't have enough bass but 99% of the time, you want literally next to no bass because you have a bassist for that + kick drum.

I owned a Nitro the first year Scott introduced them. I never could bond with it and ended up selling it six months later. Earlier this year I picked up a used 2013 QR with the drop B+ mod and LOVED it. I had a few problems with it (my/previous owners fault) and had to send it back to Scott. Long story short he’s sending me a brand new one with all the updates, and I’m really excited to get it. I own a 2014 BE100 and while they’re both in the modded Marshall vein the Splawn really gives the Friedman a run for its money and even excels beyond the Friedman at certain things. The Nitro’s more nu-Metal where the QR is more classic Marshall but can handle hard rock and metal easily.

I've got a 2012 Quick Rod (with matching Smallblock-loaded 4x12 slant) and a 2015 BE100. They can certainly cover similar ground. I really like the Splawn, but it won't do classic lower gain stuff like the Friedman. The BE has far more dynamics when rolling the guitar volume off. The Splawn does better high gain tones a la AIC, Tool, etc. But it won't touch the Friedman for ACDC "Back In Black", Dec Leopard "High and Dry", or The Darkness tones. Both will cover 80s through modern rock though. The Splawn is currently bon consignment at my buddy's shop. But it wouldn't break my heart if it doesn't sell. For the money, it's as good as it gets in a rock amp.

I'd take both of those amps over my old Bogner XTC Classic and Shiva, as well as my 2203X for 80/90s rock.

Not my experience at all. Splawn in first gear, 70's rock to AC/DC, easily.

I was going to say this. Turn the gear to 1 and run your gain lower. I only run my gain around 10-11 o'clock anyway but I think it has great dynamics. I should say mine is an old one with 3 preamp tubes. Either way, great amps and great price. Used prices are a total steal

I have owned 2 QRs and 2 Nitro amps. The Nitro does not have anywhere as much gain as people think. I have a 2012 Nitro for sale ( only because I can’t gig anymore) and with an overdrive pedal ots a monster but the QR is much more versatile. The Nitro has more low mids ( think recto territory) and the QR is a mid Happy amp. They are both great. For me I would do a QR next round and then change my mind and order a new Nitro.

You can’t go wrong.

IIRC...someone on this forum, a whilst back, had a SS head/cab....it was Orange with black racing stripes on it... the head and cab matching of course. i wanted that MR'r sooo badly.

If i gigged, Splawn would have to be my go to amp. Probably will still get one one day...just so i can play it, and say I've got one.

And...I really would like to visit their shop one day.

I have a Street Rod and I think maybe what he was referring to as "Weird mids" is the interaction of the tone stack that the mids knob has (at least on my amp). If you crank the mids you get a very crispy attack, along with the mids. The treble knob is very subtle and I have never needed to use the presence control on my amp. Scooping the mid knob on my amp just makes it sound dark.

Again, the fx loop was pretty crappy...that's all that splawn needs to fix....of course my SR was sitting next to heavy hitters when I had it(BE100 and PT100)....tough act to follow on those loops.

I never had a problem with the loop. If your playing at super low volume using the loop volume it may have some effect but at normal volumes my loop is transparent.

I think the old ones had loop issues. So far my loop works great ( 4 years in). I run an H9 through it, a Fulltone Tube Tape echo even my old GMajor. Sounds good and even the level can be used to manage low volume playing.

I will say this they are tight, not stiff but you can hear everything your guitar and you, do through the amp. Extremely articulate and spews hate!

I think that makes it EASIER to play....a lot of folks say spawn amps have a stiff feel...I didn't find that to be the case.....The Streetrod played itself....sounds like a produced record right out of the amp....FX loop still lacking though.....compared to a friedman/suhr anyway....I've heard the crank it and it levels off comments about it before. In my experience, the tone changes a bit.

I owned 2 Quickrods 2013 and 2014. You cant go wrong. I too played a mesa rectifier for years then added the Splawn. 3d tone nirvana. I then bought a Friedman which I would never sell. If I had to bring only one amp to a show it would be the Friedman or Splawn. The 2 amp mix is nirvana though. The Quickrod has more thump than the Friedman for chugs and sounds similar to my Mesa and BE100 mixed. I just sold one of my Splawns as I couldn't financially justify having 2 of them. The buyer is ecstatic. Get one. You won't regret it.
