Are Awesome!!!

I went to carl Roa's house to hang out and I had the chance to listen to and compare some 4x12 cabs. I brought over my Old Marshall cab loaded with h30's and Carl Had a Marshall Cab loaded with v30's and greenies in an x pattern, A cornford Cab Loaded with V30's and a Splawn Cab. As of Now we aren't sure what speakers are loaded the Splawn cab but I will find out as soon as Carl gets a chance to open it up. The Splawn Cab was closed shut with screws that appear to have a Star key Head and we didn't have anything to open it up with LOL.

Anyway I've always known that My Cab was a Dog but I never knew just how much of a dog it was until I got to compare it with some other cabs. Let's just say that My cab sounded the worst out of all of them and it will be going away soon! It was no contest really ;)

In my humble opinion all of Carl's cabs sounded great but the Splawn sounded the best and Id love to have one!!

If I had to rate Cab's in Order it would be 1)Splawn 2)Cornford 3) Carl's x pattern cab 4) My cab thrown away in the garbage lol

Carl is gearing up to record a new Solo album and a NEw Magic Elf Album and I'm pretty sure that you will be hearing the Fortin/Splawn combo when he is finished

Ralph

Ralph... Was the cab a straight or slant cab???
Aloha Bruddah Zach!!

Straight cab in White Tolex!! It is The bizzomb!!

I have been looking at getting a few "White/Black basketweave" Splawn 4x12 straight cabs... Hmmm

I'm thinking 6 Full stacks would look pretty darn cool

The Cornford cab was excellent and I can also tell you that the Engl Cabs were very good as well. Both are to expensive for me hear in the US but they should be ok for you in the UK.
To be honest with you I'm finding funny that these days most Mfg's are building better cabs then Marshall :D

Yeah i can get both the ENGL and Cornford cabs for decent prices here in the UK. The Cornford is a bit cheaper for me to buy than the ENGL 4x12 though.

I agree, most mfg's nowadays build better cabs than Marshall! The only Marshall cabs that i use and like, are old ones. I have a late 60's one and a late 70's one, both completely piss all over the newer Marshall cabs for tone

Fortunately for me, I live in the land of LARGE Polynesians, who are eager to help. ;)

I just got a slightly used unloaded 4x12 (straight) Splawn cabinet, delivered on Friday. The first set of speakers I tried in it was an X of V30 and G12-H30 Hellatones, originally from my Avatar Contemporary.

History: In the Avatar, they had this harsh grindy 'spike' that didn't go away with break-in. I even tried each speaker in a 1x12 I have, they all sounded great alone. If I hooked them up to just use one pair or the other in the 4x12, they sounded good. I replaced them with a mix of Warehouse Vet30 and ET-65's. It (Avatar) sounded really good, but there was a little bit of mid 'honk' that I couldn't dial out when doing anything with higher gain.

Current day: So I put the Hellatone mix in the Splawn, almost exactly the same spikiness. Pulled them out, put the Warehouses in, still had some of that mid-honk. Not as much as the Avatar, but it was still there. I wired it up so that in stereo mode, I had the Vet30's on one side, ET-65's on the other. Vet 30's by themselves sounded a lot like a nice set of of broken-in Vint30's. However, the ET-65's got me much closer to the 'modded 80's' sound I was going for, so I ordered a second pair of ET-65's for the Splawn. Once they come and are broken in a bit, I'll post what I think with a whole quad of ET-65's in the Splawn. My Splawn came with recessed square-headed screws, BTW.

On a lark, I tried wiring the Hellatones back in to the Avatar, but instead of series/parallel or parallel/series, I wired them all in parallel, 4 Ohm load. They sounded so much better that way... It also made me glad to know that the Avatar can hold its own with the Splawn, at least in terms of the cabinet itself. Speaker choice seems to make the biggest difference.

Splawn cabs rock, especially for the $$$. Their small blocks rock as well! All my customers that get splawn cabs love them!

Good to see ya Ralphie :)

Aren't the Splawn cabs made by Mojo? My Aiken is mojo and I like it, the greenbacks in it are probably 5 years old now so they are nicely broken in. No icepick and good thump even for greens. It is the cab I usually drag out for my weekly jams and it has held up well.

Too bad that diezel cab I have does not have handles, that cab with h30s is just stupid good but weighes a ton!

The "star" is probably Torques screws, any hardware store with have those in stock in either rachet or screw driver form ;)

They're not. I thought the same thing, but they're not. My Splawn and Mojo have slightly different dimensions. I think Scott actually makes them in his shop.

Cool stuff Ralph. It's interesting too because I don't believe Splawn uses finger joints. I'm fairly certain that they use a rabet joint which is a very simple joinery. So your experience proves that basic construction, as long as it's done right, can sound fantacular.

For the record, I think I saw a picture of one of the Splawn cabs in the oil finish (no tolex). And since it wasn't covered, you could see there were no finger joints.

Carry on.

Dave
OOps!! Missed this!!

Yup, even if teh construction is simple.. That cab sounded fantastic!!

Im totally not a fan of mixing speakers. I experimented with it many times and Ive always went back to loading a quad of the same speakers

Thanks so much for posting your observation and it's great to know that the Avatars hold their own!!!

On another note, I hear you about the wiring! Ive experimented with that as well and it does make a difference!!

I have to agree! With that said, I am amazed at How Scott keeps his prices in Check. I was just saying that to Carl Roa last night . I have to say that it's most definitely appreciated especially by broke dudes like myself lol

I hear you. You and Deb are welcome ANYTIME

My Splawn demo cab in the store has helped sell many amps. Than it has helped sell many Splawn cabs when the customer decides to put their cab head to head with it.

Im happy with my splawn cab, it had mesa v30 and k100 in it and sounds awsome with my qr and nitro.
