Strings , 10's vs. 09's preference?

played 9's forever then switched to 10's about 2 years ago.
Now 9's feel too much like spaghetti strings

I used 9s for years, then switched to 10s because people were saying "more sustain, better tone, blah, blah" and then just stuck with it for over a decade. last year I switched back to 9s, still have my tone, still have my sustain, they last just as long, and they're just a hair lighter to the touch/bending/etc. I have this thought, maybe irrational, that they put less tension on the thin, low-profile necks of my shred guitars and thus are actually better for preserving the "health" of my necks. I wonder if there's any support for my thought...

You guys playing with 11's actually play any notes above the 5th fret? Or are just chugaluggin'.

I'm junk at improvising, but I play written solos and stuff. Mostly Gilmour, Hendrix, Page etc. The feel of that wound G string is great. I really feel like I can play faster with heavier strings, they don't move as much. You wonder why old blues guys like BB King makes those faces when they play... you try bending that heavy ass string and see what kind of face you make!

Some of my guitars have 9's and some have 10's. I tune to E flat. For me it doesn't much matter, but I don't like the mixed sets with the heavy bottom and light top. Those feel weird to me.

:)

Just so we are clear, there is no right or wrong approach. It really boils down to what feels good, and what your fingers can handle. You can eq any slight tonal differences afterwards. If you are a good player, with good technique, it'll show. If you are fighting heavy strings all night because they are too big for your finger strength, those in the audiences wont take that into consideration and think you suck as a guitarist. Personally, I prefer 10s.

I think Yngwie brings the fookin' fury with 8-48.

Ed uses 9-40.

Shoot, the Rev. Billy G. uses 8's.

All those guys have great tone. Play what's comfortable and sounds good to you. That's all that matters.

Jimmy Page uses .008's allegedly.

9-46's here ... i dont do much other than standard tuning and then down a 1/2 step or so, so they work for me. i have tried 10's on numerous occasions and just cant seem to get used to 'em

Sure. No problems. And you can also look at guys like Slash, SRV etc. A lot of good lead-players use .0011s.

SRV tuned down. Still though, quite the feat to play how he did with 13s, and a Strat.

10s on everything usually, although i think longer scale necks/fenders 9s are more fun/easier to play

11s in standard with 25.5" scale for me. Then up a guage with every whole step down, holding scale length constant.

This.

I've been using 10's tuned to Eb for as long as I can remember but when my band split last year I tuned back up to pitch. Bit tight at first but soon got used to it and my guitars sounded fuller to my ears for it.
Roll on to this year and I bought a PRS DGT, strung with 11's and fitted with big frets and it sounds HUGE (and tuned to E) , and they feel like 10's superb tone

Excuse my shit playing.
Here's me age 16 doing some improv 80s power ballad shit. 11s in E standard, 25.5" scale. Give it a chance before deciding I suck, even though I do.

here's me age 15, 5 foot 6 with small hands playing 11s. Solo is at 60 seconds.

I recently went to 9\42's they make bends so effortlessly, like the guitar plays itself. I use gibson strings as they dont break as easy and they last longer without corrosion an loosing tone.

Daddario 10s for me. I switched to 11's for a few minutes last week and hated the feel.
