Those are some really nice moderns, that Koa one looks amazing. I also appreciate the thorough response. Just a few questions, it seems that for basswood/maple top moderns most tend to prefer the Aldrich set versus the SSV/SSH+. Have you had a chance to compare the two pickup sets in a basswood modern?

Is there any reason you prefer the Alder over the Basswood? I'm leaning more towards the basswood at the moment because all of my current guitars are either Alder or Mahogany. I remember trying out a basswood modern previously (forgot what pickups were in it) and it just had way more clarity than the one I previously owned (mahogany body/neck).

In regards to the radius, is the 10-14 the standard option? How would you compare the 14 or 16? Are these overall just flatter, would you say it's comparable to a EBMM Petrucci neck? Seems there are so many more different options now than previously.

I have not actually had the chance to play a basswood/maple top Modern with an Aldrich set, but I was just strictly going off the one that I owned with SSV/SSH+. For my taste, it was just begging for more. Too "mild-mannered", for lack of a better description...in comparison to an alder bodied Modern with SSV/SSH+, which to my ears sounds more aggressive and in your face. The only reason I can give you as to why I prefer my alder Suhrs....well, they've just always been my favorite from an all-around hard rock sound. But, I'd really have to believe that a basswood/maple top Modern with an Aldrich set would just sound amazing. So, by all means...go with basswood if that's what you want. One of those Pro Series M* Moderns with the SSV/SSH+ set might be just right for you. You might find those pickups to be more than adequate inside of a basswood/maple top Modern.

In regards to the fingerboard radius, the 10"-14" compound is basically standard with Suhrs, as it's found on the majority of most of them. It's really just personal taste. Most people are very happy with their compound radius and find it very comfortable. It's just not for me though, as I like the radius to stay even all the way down the neck, without getting rounder, the closer you get to the nut. It just feels awkward to me. As far as being comparable to a EBMM Petrucci neck? The Modern Elliptical neck is quite different in feel to me. For one, the Petrucci has a wider nut, compared to Suhr's normal 1.650 nut width (which I prefer)....although you can custom order your Modern with a 1.687 nut width if you prefer a wider nut width.

My new number one is Mark Day's Modern. It's Mahogany neck and body with Aldrich pickups now.

The blue Modern is my M6 I bought recently. Basswood body and Maple neck. It had an SSV and SSH+ pickups but now has Aldrich's and I'm loving the tone way more from those.

Yeah he traded someone for a Les Paul and then I got a chance to buy it. It's an awesome guitar.

Awesome, I had no idea. The reason I bought my guitar was because I always loved his. Does it have the same specs as mine except for the gold hardware?

Here's my newest Modern that I custom ordered through Wild West Guitars:

Basswood body + quilted maple top + custom purple burst
Maple neck (modern eliptical 0.800-0.850) + ebony fretboard + abalone inlays
Floyd Rose bridge + D-Tuna + Tremol-No
DiMarzio Gravity Storm pickups

The neck is a little thicker, .820-.870 is about it. Your Modern looks very cool

Decided to go with a Pro M7 in charcoal burst for almost half the price of the custom I specced

Yeah, I think it would have been your most logical move to go with a Pro M* model, as they represent the best value for getting the guitar you want versus going with a custom build that often raises the price considerably and then you have to wait months to receive it. As long as you get on with the neck carve/fingerboard radius (as most do)....it'll probably a good fit for ya. As you said, the pickups being the biggest wildcard. Although, many like them just fine. Worst case scenario, you might decide to swap out the bridge pickup for an Aldrich. Either way, you'll be getting a great guitar. Looks great...congrats!

I'm sure it would exceed my expectations, seems like a great value. The main reason I went for it is the guitar itself had probably 80% of what I was looking for, couldn't justify the extra money for the small difference it would make. Plus I didn't want to wait 8 months. I'm perfectly fine with the default neck carve/fingerboard radius. Had no problem with it on my previous modern, I just didn't dig the mahogany on mahogany spec.

Also not sure how true it is, but one of the dealers I spoke to said that Suhr is no longer offering the older Pro series and I would have to custom order one.. so I ended up just ordering mine from Humbucker Music.

It's true that the Pro Series has been revamped for 2013. Current models and configurations are listed on our website, but we are still fulfilling orders for the old Pro Series guitars, as dealers already had them on order.

Though I would throw mine in here for opinions an stuff. This is my number one. And number 2 coming soon.
Solid Koa Body. Pau Ferro neck. .780-.830 neck with a 6 inch radius. 510 recessed trem. Aldrich pickups with 5 way and blower. :)

Number 2 will be same spec hardware wise but with a 1 PC Honduran Mahogany Body, 5A Quilted maple top, 5A museum roasted maple neck with a cocobolo fretboard in bengal burst!

Hope this helps!

Anytime I get a chance to show off my babies I do. 10 - 14 radius .800 - .850 necks. Jumbo SS frets. SSV ML SSH+ pickups. Push pull to split the hums and the coolest feature the blower switch.

Blue is made of swamp ash with maple top.
The Drip is korina body and neck cocabolo fret board. ( this one cuts thru the mix like no other)
Betty (White) Is my #1 Mahogany body and neck Maple top Ebony board. I've got MCP Hot Heads in this one. It screams.

This thread is severely gas inducing. Some incredible guitars in this thread.I need a Suhr again.

Damn this thread.
A modern has to have the reverse headstock for me.
It just looks right like that to me.
