Sweetwater - Plek - "The Holy Grail Of Setups"

Why do they advertise this for guitars already Plek'd like Gibson or Heritage? Do they think it needs another $299 worth of fretwork, or are we to be so ignorant that we don't know certain manufacturers already did it? Just a thought for the day...

I dont see the point in having a new guitar fret leveled unless it needs it. Dont get me wrong Ive bought new guitars that needed a level right out of the gate and they benefited from the job done by my local tech. BUT why not get the guitar in your hands first and see if the notes all ring clear with the action set how you like.

I've certainly owned a few that needed it, but both Heritages I've owned were factory plek'd and flawless, as are most higher end Gibsons. It's funny how they push on on these higher end guitars, and even Custom Shop.

Seems to me it's sold as a kind of insurance against a guitar you can't play beforehand possibly being poorly setup from the factory.

It would probably be silly to add it to a guitar that's already had it done but I'm sure a bunch of guitars Sweetwater sells haven't had the treatment, that could benefit.

I like that they offer that, but I'm with you wondering why it would be done for Gibsons and others that use the Plek machine already.

EDIT - I will also say that I see a huge improvement on the fretwork on modern Gibsons and I'm sure that's why.

I’ve o we Ned plenty of plek’d guitars and found none of them made enough difference to make me love a guitar. They’re all gone except some Gibsons, but I do t keep them for the fretwork. Luxxtone and my Japanese luthier yield a better product than and plek neck I’ve had.

A local shop makes sure that everything that goes out the door has good fretwork 'n stuff, everything I've pulled off their wall feels great, I think I'll take that over Sweetwater.

I've heard from a local setup guy that SW doesn't do a setup with the frets. What's the point of getting your frets perfect if you're not going to lower the action at the nut. Getting your nut slots cut down properly is how you get your guitar to play great.

I think the Plek machine cuts the nuts too?

I can say that I have bought Gibsons with uneven frets in the past and don't see that problem anymore with my last several guitars. Kudos to them for that.

Yeah, they've been much better. They also do indeed slot and cut the nut with the Plek machine. It's made a world of difference. I noticed as soon as they got rid of that crap Corian and went Graph Tech and Plek cutting them.

Never tried a pleked guitar, but I always wanted to try a Buzz Feiten-modified guitar.

Two of my guitars might benefit from a Plek set-up, my Fender Player II Modified HSS Strat has one high fret and maybe my Ibanez Prestige AZ2402.
The Ibanez plays great, but I think it has one high fret that might be stopping me from lowering the action a tad more.
The Fender has one or two high frets around fret 17 forcing me to keep the action higher than I would like on the high E and high B string.
I don't know if it needs a Plek or if a local tech could level the frets that are a problem and do a set-up for even less.

The Ibanez is such a great guitar it might be worth it, the Fender maybe not.

Funny thing is, the Ibanez arrived with a nick in it, they sent me a replacement with a pro set-up free of charge, it played better than mine, but it did not sound as good so I kept the first one and they gave me $250 or $300 off.
