Both of them can play but I find it hard to take seriously anyone who calls themselves "Synyster Gates". I know - "Slash" isn't that much better.

For the love of God people, what's wrong with "normal" names???

Get off my lawn! :D

Fairly smart marketing gimmick.

Hopefully it was the label who talked them into it and not personal nick names.

I read Slash's book....its a nickname he has had since he was a kid. It was a skateboard thing.....The other guy, im pretty sure he came up with that himself while gandering into the mirror one day

I also watched Syn's demo for his Sig Schecter Amp. He discussed the details on the noise gate. He said he has always had big issues with gates. I thought to myself.. Wow thats sinister.

Better player?? We focus too much on the whole 'who's better' thing. Both very decent guitar players.

That being said, in my opinion, Slash does a better job at songwriting, phrasing, tone, attitude and longevity...but he is more blues influenced.. which tends to my ear a bit more. The man can definitely hold his own... His playing on Anastasia really sums up his last 25yrs of playing.. and why I dig that tune.

Synyster is classically trained, well versed and very neo classical influenced (melodic/harmonic minor) in his phrasing.... more 'built for speed' and 'not for feel' in my opinion. Stage presence is shit... just no feel for me tho I do dig some of the riffs. I like players that can hold the 'right' single note for 4 measures AND rip it the hell up if the song calls for it... ala Timmons, Moore, Sykes, Norum etc.

Just my opinion..... They're both 'better' players than me and making a decent living at it

To be fair, that was one of Syn's earlier solos. His playing has much improved in recent years. He was pretty sloppy then.

Agreed ^^^

Slash killed it in this video for sure. But Syn is a damn good guitarist.

Leib you know what kind of music I like  and have never much been into Ax7 at all.

When they first came out they had more Death Metalish vocals and I thought they were ok but after the next couple of albums I really could not get into them at all.

But the new album has some amazing songs and I think he has matured and advanced quite a bit as a guitarist.

I have had the solo from Hail to the King stuck in my head this entire week and that's what got me you tubing Syn, hence the thread post.

Yeah, he definitely took a more bluesy vibe for this latest album. His playing is more mature now, but IMO it's not as fun to listen to as some of the earlier stuff.

Slash by a mile in that comparison..... I like Gates though, I think he writes some cool stuff that definitely has slash' influence.

This thread gets all the attention but the Zacky vs Izzy thread is what keeps it altogether

HaHa yeah I think Zacky has more of chance then Gates has on Slash....For me Slash probably is and always will be the "best" blues influenced player in Rock music... There are def shredder guys that can run circles around slash when it comes to speed but when it comes to straight up soul in a rock setting Slash is hard to beat. Gates is cool but Slash wrote the book on it, Haha that was a bit dramatic. I digress

That was comical!  This Gates guy doesn't know his intonation sucks because he has no ear! I don't know what his talent is, but it sure isn't music.

Slash's playing is equally offensive...

With all due respect. That is pretty absurd.

Maybe he doesn't know how to intonate his guitar, maybe he does?

Usually techs handle that stuff and I wouldn't be surprised if slash had ever even tuned a guitar while on the road with GNR.

Idk if this holds true but google shows Slash's net worth at 32m and Gates at 16m

Slash has quite a few years on Gates as well but 16m in nothing to laugh about.

To each their own but Gates is a good player and can defintely bring it.

Something tells me you have never sat down and listened to much of his playing.

I was actually referring to his intonation (Slash included) - not the instrument itself. If you can't hear what I'm referring to, then it's a mute issue.

Net worth = talent?

Kirk Hammett has a net worth of 70 million. Yngwie is worth 7.5 million. Kirk must be approximately 9.5 times more talented than Yngwie.....
