Here's a tutorial I did recently on how to play that descending "group of 5" lick that JB and Eric Johnson are known for. It's a great lick but it might take some "wood sheddin'" to get the economy picking thing down.

I hope you all get something out of it. Thanks for watching.

cheers...and Happy New Year!

Awesome! I'll have to give this a try when I'm back to a geet.

I've been working on that for a year and still only nail it about 70% of the time.

I like how DR finished his version of this lesson with...hope that helps. Lol.

Hey Rezamatix, If DR had been around in the 80's, he'd be a household name. I think he must be one of the top 10 rock blues players around right now. Killer guitarist!

So is the biggest part of the tone rolling down the tone knob so you get that violin sustain?

Hey Kapo, do you mean my tone or JBs? For me my tone knob is at 10, but I'm using Suhr Aldrich pickups and they have quite a bit less high end to them but are really rich in the mids.
cheers

EJ's tone is the HS-2 with the back tone knob relocated to the bridge pickup rolled down to about 7.
I do this with all my Stratocasters. People wonder why my Strat tone is so fat. This is why.

Hey MississippiMetal, yeah I don't want to even say how long I've been working on that lick! If you're an alternate picker that economy picking thing is a killer.
cheers

This is cool, thx. I now know it. All I need to do is practice it…

Steve

I've been practicing this for about a year and a half and have it down pretty well. I always found it relatively easy because of flawed technique that I had been employing up until a little while before I started practicing the lick. If I was playing 5,6,7,8 up and down all of the strings, I used to alternate pick each string individually. Going from incorrect alternate picking, to correct alternate picking, to economy picking made this lick so easy I thought there had to be more to it.

Hey Zap, I saw a vid somewhere of JB and he was saying that when he heard Eric Johnson for the first time it blew his mind and that it took him a year and a half to to get EJ's licks down.

If you've been playing your whole life one way and then you start learning a completely different technique, it takes a lot of repetition to hammer that into your brain. To me that's the key, getting it in your head. Once you have it in there though the fingers just follow fairly easily.

cheers

Very cool  What delay are you using?

Hey beachbum, thanks man. I'm using a TC Electronics Nova System. It's a digital delay around 400ms. I really love that thing. It's awesome, the delays are pristine. I also use it for flange, phase, octaves, detune (chorus) things. The cool thing is that most of the modules that I use are from the G System so the quality is incredible.
I run it through the loop as I don't use the compression or the analogue drive sections.

For 300 bucks it's really amazing. If I were to buy all the pedals that this thing recreates it would probably be around 4 grand!

Anyways, I better stop because I'm starting to sound like an infomercial!
Thanks for watching man
cheers

Cool, going to work on this! For some reason I can do ascending and descending runs in groups of 3,4 and 6 easily but not 5. Guess I programmed the others in early on.

Yeah, since I realized my technique was wrong, I corrected it with a lot of work. I can actually play both ways now if I want. What I meant was that performing the lick is sort of a hybrid of the the two ways I've played, which made it substantially easier to do the two down picks/economy picking.

Always working on correcting & improving my technique.

Like the lesson, THX!

Now top that off with that Jimmy Page lick Jimmy plays at the end of each of his solos and you're set...

When it's played slower you can totally hear that Frampton intro Riff/melody from Do you Feel Like We Do. Wonder if it was the inspiration for E.J.

Hey glassjaw7, I hear ya bud. I struggled with this for a LONG time. Playing groups of 5 just feels weird right? But eventually I got my brain wrapped around it and although I'm still not as good at it as I want to be, I understand what's happening. It really helps that you can play this out of time, as long as you land it on time it works. Sometimes I'll play it starting out slow and speeding it up as it descends.

thanks for watching bud

Thanks Doubleneck. That's the beauty of playing an instrument. You can always get better. You can play until you're 90 and still just be scratching the surface.
cheers bud
