Used gear sales

I generally plan on selling stuff a few hundred less than I pay when I buy used gear. Why? Because when I decide to sell it, I want it gone. If that means it costs me a little, who cares… it’s like renting the gear. I’d gladly pay $200-300 or so to get an amp I'm interested in checking out for a week or two. No big deal… if I like it, I keep if not I can move it quickly because I undercut the market.

I check the deals here and on CL almost daily for awesome deals.

You gotta be checking literally constantly, I drive around all day and refresh my Craigslist every red light I hit, I don’t know how many times I’ve gotten a message I was the first one out of 20 in an hour since posting, same with market place and other sites.

When Trump eliminates federal income tax: Gear sales will flourish😎

Still seems to be a buyers market in my area. If priced right and cheap, it moves. If its a high ticket item, good luck moving it, even if priced well.

When you're selling gear today, it's important to set realistic expectations. Yes, if you price your gear well, it'll eventually sell—but patience is key. The market isn't moving as quickly as it used to, and even genuinely good deals can take weeks to attract a buyer. You might need to be prepared for deeper discounts if you're looking to move something faster. The days of instant sales are, at least temporarily, behind us.

On the buying side, although prices for new gear might seem sky-high, don't let those list prices scare you. There's actually never been a better time to snag deals. If you add something to your "watch" list on Reverb, you'll often get immediate offers at significant discounts. And if you're willing to pick up the phone and contact stores directly, you can usually negotiate an even better price. So, despite those high sticker prices, it's actually an amazing time to be in the market for new gear.

But here's where things get tricky: Many sellers haven't caught on to the new reality. They’re pricing gently used gear at close-to-new prices like they did in 2021. Sure, that worked a couple of years ago, but not anymore. Buyers are getting steep discounts on brand-new items, making used gear at inflated prices a tough sell. If you're trying to recoup your initial investment, you're likely going to face frustration. Adjusting your pricing to the current market is essential if you actually want your gear to sell, and some people just aren't ready to accept this.

Ultimately, most of today's frustration comes from sellers who refuse to accept the market has shifted. The market has simply seen a correction. Keep your prices fair, adapt to current (or past, lol) conditions, and you'll have a much smoother experience buying and selling gear.

Not much seems to be moving at the local stores here. Only entry-level or discounted items.

Depends on if they bought it new or used. I bought a LP DC for about a grand, and I'm trying to sell it for the grand I paid for it. It's worth that. If they bought it new and try to sell it for that price, they're insane.
Yup.

If one looks at Guitar Center, there are tons of used gear deals & you can snap up one if you're quick.

Who the hell gets a tax refund? I pay out the ass all year and still have to cut a hefty check in April.
We got a small refund this year thanks to write offs. We were able to use the refund to help pay part of our property taxes.

I used to be able to pay my entire property tax bill with my return, now it’s only a fraction

There's an asshole on CL selling stuff for way over MSRP. He has been listing his shit higher and higher, WTF? It won't sell, ever. But why? What a waste.

I filed my return in January and it still hasn't been processed. So no gear for me.

I picked up a guitar in 2023 (as a hedge against inflation of course) and it's worked out well. It was a black burst Blade that was originally listed at 2K. I eventually bought it at 995. It's a great time to buy used guitars, as the market is flooded.

I just joined this forum a few days ago, and it was funny when I tried to post with the word "thump" (I was talking about my Friedman amp). My post kept getting rejected. I didn't know why, but then I noticed I wrote the president's name by accident instead of thump.

Just curious, what do you mean by your post got "rejected"? There are no word filters on this site.

Oh really? Maybe because it was my first post, but I got a message about my post looked like it might be spam. When I changed that one word, my post went through ok. Or maybe it was for some other reason?

That is very strange. If you encounter that again, please screenshot it and contact me!

@japetus, will do if I see it again. I figured it was just a filter to remove anything politics-related because most forums these days do not want that. Maybe it was because my first post was a bit long and had a picture? Some spammers do that.

This board is fairly open to political ideas. I would suggest taking a trip to our famous "Off Topic" section...where you will witness many viewpoints on display...of all sorts.

It happened again this morning when I tried to write the president's last name in a post. This time, I got a screenshot.
