You know, it’s actually ok to like both eras.

That whole 1995-6 time was amazing. Humans Being came out first with Twister, the the Respect the Wind sustain-y solo. The tone was HUGE! First official sighting with the Peavey Wolfgang.

Then, soon after, the break up and the two new songs with Roth. Those songs still hold up! Me Wise Magic is just killer. That outro….

Was an exciting time before the debacle that followed.

I forgot how much that song f'ing rocks!

I really dig Humans Being and unfortunately was the song that ended that era of Van Halen.

I don't ever compare the two singers. I'm old enough to remember Dave leaving to do his solo stuff and they were just done by that point.

It was weird hearing the new Van Halen wirh keyboards, etc. but I enjoyed that era as well. Van Halen just had too many drama moments over the years. Who is in, who is out, etc. Just a bunch of crap.

When I first heard VH none of us heard them before. The first time I heard them was also the first time I saw them, in 1978 opening for Black Sabbath on the Never Say Die tour.

Needless to say, we were all blown away. I remember Roth doing arial splits, and EVH running up the front of his amps and jumping down. The power, the energy the music was like a tsunami. We'd never seen or heard anything like it. I was a big Sabbath fan at the time, and I had to admit VH made them look old and tired, and boring in comparison.

Within a few days of that show, I went to our local indy record shop, they had two LP copies of VH1, and I bought one. Saw the VH2 tour too.

I knew of Haggar from Ronnie Montrose band; the both were talented but nothing either did ever interested me much. I think DLR was, and still is, his own worst enemy. His solo band after VH with Vai, Sheehan and Bissonette could have done much more if not for DLR's ego.

For me Van Hagar never captured that force, energy, it was more like every other band at the time, with a great guitarist who wrote some of the best rhythm riffs in rock...and I was already into the new Maiden, Priest, Crue, hair metal (White Lion, Cinderella, Skid Row,...) and thrash more than hard/pop rock.

When I was younger I liked both eras equally, but as I've gotten older I definitely prefer the Roth era. The Hagar albums still have a lot of great songs, but then there are others that just don't work for me at all - songs that sound like they would play in the background of an episode of Full House.

I respected Van Halen more for not trying to replace what DLR and that era was when they got Sammy. They could have asked Marq Torien or some other singer to come in and do the DLR thing but they started something different. Even though they were still called Van Halen, wasn't the same band at all in my mind.

That song is terrible. They were hit or miss with Sammy. 5150 is great though! I think it's their best w/him.
OU812 pretty much blows, Balance is pretty good, I like few songs on that album. After that, they lost me entirely.

Dave all the way as far as song writing goes for their style of music. Sammy's songs are mostly love fests that doesn't match their image or style.

Everything about Roth was a perfect match for eddies upbeat, swinging and over the top kind of party rock. Hagar to me though just never really fit, he just kind of neuters everything is the only way I can describe it. Hagar would be better in a Michael Bolton kind of lighter rock band
