What Are Klon Style Boosts Good For?

I had never used any type of Klon prior to a few weeks ago. Got a recommend to use one with my Wizard, so I bought a Chiron 3.0 from Griff. Holy cripes do I wish I had tried one a long time ago.
I tried an original back in the day. I thought it lacked gain and was too bright (I was using a 3sc strat). I much preferred a TS style pedal. The 3.0 Waynzo has produced is the only one I'd be interested in trying since it has actual EQ controls built into it. I'd say you made a smart purchase.

I just got the big boy Decibelics Big Klone for under $500 USD. It's incredible.

Same here .

I bought one back in about 2003, when the hype was gaining some traction.

I drove to Austin and bought one for $175.

I ended up getting rid of it less than a year later.

HATED it as an OD, and I just couldn’t justify it taking up the space of 3 pedals on my board just as a boost.

It would have been worth a fortune today, as it was in mint condition and was # 175 ever made.

Oh well, there’s A LOT of clones that I’ve tried that are as good and way more versatile than an original Klon

Thanks, I feel like less of dumbass now, LOL. I think you are the only guy who shared a similar experience as me with the original 3 knob style. I flat out hated it as well and for many years chuckled at guys who loved them so much cause I couldn't see it. It's weird what works and sounds great for one guys rig and style is absolutely abysmal for another.

I'm close to putting in an order with Waynzo for his Prince of Tone clone but I suspect it's more up my alley than a Klon would be. I've been using his Gladio clones for a little over a year and they are pretty sweet but I'm still interested in trying a couple other boxes. With his build skills and price point, along with him actually putting some design features into the pedals that I've asked for I can't pass up the chance.

I like the Klone in all situations, into a clean amp, into a just breaking up amp, and as a boost into a dirty amp or pedal.

I live 3, the Chiron, the Chellee Pony Boy, and a BYOC Silver Poney. The Pony Boy and Chiron are my favorites. To me the Klone is everything I wish the tubescreamer did. I am down to one tubescreamer.

Just curious...I've never tried one and a friend is bringing by a Klon reproduction pedal made by JHS to try with my Mrashalls. Rock? Metal? Clean boost? Use the gain / distortion? or just an output boost? Any thoughts would be appreciated
Mid-gain, on the edge of breakup, using the Klon to push it over the top. It adds a pretty cool quality

Klones are great as they do not cut loads of lowend like your regular Ts9 / Sd1 based OD, they keep your sauce intact, but add a lil of everything, from harmonic content to brightness (and wont kill your amp bite, which is something many boosters do). It's delicious with Marshalls

it'll give you more of what you already have .... the more you crack the gain the more harmonics you'll bring in due to the germanium diodes ...

but it's a double edge sword ..... if you're running hi gain ... you'll most likely want to keep the gain low on the pedal ...

keep in mind .... the Klon splits the signal at entry .... overdrives only one of them and then mixes them together at the end of the circuit ... ( unless you have a Chiron Deluxe or a Chiron 3.0 ) .... this function is on a dual pot ( Gain ) how it works is .... as you turn the gain up ..... the clean signal goes down .... and vice a versa ...... if you turn the gain down the clean signal goes up

let me know when you're ready for the real deal ...

the only OG Klon i ever checked out was given to Doyle Dykes as a gift by the dude that built them. he used it with his acoustic pedalboard for a coldplay tune and ran me through the features during a soundcheck.
in that scenario it sounded weird to me. a coarse distortion blended with the clean and even Doyle was sorta on the fence about it but it worked for him because it didn’t mess up his original clean tone. just layered the grit in for some texture.
