The sound changes not the tone. the tone is you my brutha

Cute semantics... But I disagree with the assertion you presented here in the context of the discussion, and would add that with an open tuning with NO hands touching the instrument but for strumming the open chord, the physics of the tone knobs still change the sound/tone so....

Please define tone and sound individually, so we can have a clear understanding, and Intelligent discussion-- If possible, on your end-- my brutha. :D

Ok one more time and im done, cause everyone has his or her beliefs.Sound is the amp /Tone is who`s playing thru it. Good example. Two bands playing thru a good 35000 watt system one sounds great the other not so much as long as the soundman is not fuckn them but i hope you see at least a little of my point but if you dont thats ok too.

No fuckn way is tone in the gear. If it was everybody would have the same tone. DUH
If tone is in your hands then you can add more bass or middle or treble with your hands? If your amp is off can you still get "your tone"?

People sound different because everyone has their own unique style or technique.

Yes to all of your questions. Move your hand closer or further from said pickup. Pick harder/ lighter. Play hot for teacher on a Tele unplugged on the couch. If you cant get it unplugged on an electric you aint gonna get plugged in. FUB

No, 'Sound' in the literal sense-- is a physical wave form that travels through the air, and is perceived in the brain via the ears.

Tone (in part) is the characteristics of the sound wave (Bass, Treble etc...) Which is why I said earlier-- tone is a result of BOTH the player starting a sequence of events which is finalized through the gear, so as to be able to travel through the air to BE perceived by the listener.

An individual's "Style" is another story, which takes their technique and personal physical attributes into account as a 'part' of the end resulting tone equation, which is shaped via their GEAR in order to be perceived ANYWHERE, by anyone listening. Without the gear, there is no sound, no tone, nothing... to be perceived at all. ;)

Thanks for playing

You and I have completely different definitions of tone and technique.

You mean by adjusting your technique with how you use your "gear", the tone changes??? Thank you for making MY point.

Let's hear a clip of your magic finger tone/playing/sound without you using any gear. It isn't going to happen, I know-- I know. It's okay. I am not talking about making hand fart noises. Just to clarify...

I rest my case

For me it's my pickboy heavy guitar picks...even if I play with my toes, knuckles, teeth or elbows...no pickboy, no tone. ;)

Hey smartass You mean to tell me you cant play all the things you know unplugged and you cant still hear your tone, if not your deaf

I can play unplugged and hear the piece of music I am playing, but the 'tone' is greatly different when amplified through different amps/gear, or when switching from an Ovation to a Gibson J200 acoustic, to a Gibson Chet Atkins.

If you can't hear the tone shaping that different gear provides, perhaps you should sell shoes instead play of music.

Try this if you don't think tone requires gear too: Let us know how it works out for you

its all subjective IMO. I personally think tone is embedded in the players mind/hands, personality and Attitude/Approach, and a good sounding guitar and amp are added enhancements to create the sounds you are hearing, or want to hear. Im a big fan of great sounding guitars that strum and sound like a piano or acoustic. As far as what could impact it, not playing with ears and over abuse of effects...not that effects are bad, but if they are not dialed in right, it can impact your overall sound/tone. Practicing acoustically on a regular basis I've found will help u achieve good tone..Spanish Fly - EVH, ALL HAND TONE! Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass never plugged in when practicing. they had serious tone!

good luck.

Ya know what's funny...we're on a site named Rig-Talk debating whether or not our rigs make any difference.
No one on this thread has said gear doesn't make a difference so I guess we're on the right track.

Not sure I follow what you mean. Several posters have written that tone is all in the fingers...so, doesn't that mean gear doesn't make a difference?

Nope maybe you should get a hearing aid device. Dude i know what all you island boys are about/caucasian haters, i live in the other 48 stay on your fuckn island with your rack that is taller than you. NO YOUR WRONG BITCH in so many ways.

Disagree... ALL HAND Technique... Guitar, mic, console and Engineering produced the recorded tone/sound

You KNOW I respect you, your playing, and your tones but if you replace where I have bolded "tone" with technique, I'd agree

Still waiting for you to debunk anything I've written with the slightest evidence of intelligence on your part...

Still waiting... Don't worry though... I'm not holding my breath.

After having made my living playing music, and for 22 years on the mainland, playing and working with professionals-- clearly more adept than you, I think I'll sleep well tonight, whether you agree with me or not.

You KNOW I respect you, your playing, and your tones but if you replace where I have bolded "I suck" with "I really suck", I'd agree

^^^

Are you now out to prove that you lack impulse control, as well as any signs of intelligence?

Try again when you're old enough to buy beer, or up your dosage, so that you get your impulse control back-- to the point that you can make a lucid argument.

Well if your so worried about the where tone comes from maybe you should take the time to find out. Youre full of shit
