What's a good price for an original JCM 800 2203?

I've got a reissue that sounds good. Just put in the Lynch Mod which beefs it up nicely. Wondering what an original 100 W head would sound like. If I keep an eye out for one, what would be a good price for a clean one?

Depends.
Combos can still be had for a decent price, ~$1500.
Prices on the heads have gone astronomically insane. Expect to find asking price of $2000+.
I've had great JMPs and JCMs, 100w and 50w. I wouldn't pay over $1500 for any of them.

The reissues are actually great. Even the SC20 sounds great, for it's wattage. I'd be happy with the reissue, until I could find a great price on a stock JCM. On the 2203, you want one before 1984 (I think?), due to the circuit changes. Filtering for sure, plus board mounted pots, and I'm not sure what else.
Someone more knowledgeable than me can chime in with specifics.

Common asking prices are 2500-3k these days. A “good” price is around $2k. Sometimes you can find one for $1600-1800 if you really watch for them.

The OG’s sound better to me than any 2203x.

Yeah, prices for clean, unmolested heads are at crazy numbers these days.
The re-issues are legit.
At this point, if you find a minty original, and you have to have it, the price is the price, or no amp for you. That's just the way the market for clean OG's is these days.
If find one in the $2k range, and it sounds good, consider yourself lucky.
Given what else is available these days, I wouldn't pay that kind of cash, but YMMV.

I was doing a Facebook Marketplace deal in the local GC parking lot last week when I saw a guy cart a bunch of amps in. I was busy talking with my seller, but I was trying to politely end the conversation to go see what that other guy had before he got into the store. No luck. When we were done, I walked in and two of the heads were a very clean 2203 and a less clean JCM2000 DSL100. I'm sure GC killed the guy with a lowball offer. I really don't need another amp and I had a 1987S (bought here on RT) being delivered the next day. But I probably could have gotten that 2203 for a really good price.

I have been mainly playing my newly acquired rectifiers, so was thinking I might possibly sell my modded 2203....as I have a bunch of Marshalls.

I fired it up and gave it a thrashing, nope, not going anywhere.

Secret to music go round is to trade some gear towards the purchase: this allows a great deal of negotiating room........coming from a guy who has bought a shit ton of gear at his friend's store.

Could be worse. If you're gonna get caught hiding something, guitars seem to be the best possible case scenario. Sometimes I trade a bunch of stuff in towards 1 item, just to clean house, and not have to deal with selling. Grab that Dumble Klon Gilmour Custom Shop 1960 P Bass you always wanted.
