Whats this new Friedman amp??

I would have to try it to hear if it has enough low end, but I don't understand how the 20 watt version would have a big low end with 2 EL84 tubes and no thump control. The 100 watt Jose has tons of low end, but I'm curious how this one compares. Just generally speaking, I much prefer EL34 amps to EL84.

I completely disagree with every point. I own and have gigged with a JJ Jr for years and it sounds killer and has plenty of volume for any situation I find myself in (rehearsals and gigs.)

They are also priced right for MADE IN USA amps.

I've replaced the EL84s as a preventive measure, but it sure didn't eat the tubes like crazy. I also don't even notice they are EL84s. I mean, what is the "EL84" sound that I should hate?

I know we all have different preferences, but I just don't agree with anyone in this thread hating on the 20-watters. Then again, I've ONLY owned the JJ Jr in that line.

I've owned both the JJ Jr., and I've owned the PT-20 V2. My only complaint is they run out of steam.

It makes sense why he would release this one. Not everyone can afford $3800 for the big Jose, and this gets you the same circuit and probably close in terms of feel and tone for a lot less money.

Owning a EL84 Amp myself and using it through a 4-12, it really doesn't push air like a 34 based Amp does..

Never played a Friedman, but the world needs fewer EL84 amps.

That said, the lack of thump would be a good thing in a recording situation.

I have to say based on the demo video with Sammy posted in this thread...the Jose 20 does sound a bit more saturated and also a touch smoother

This amp is 2000€ in Europe. For 800€ more, you can buy the Brit 50, which will sound better at any volume and the EL34s will not be destroyed like the EL84s unless you crank the amp all time.

Those small EL84s amps sound so good at low/medium volume because the way they are designed, they really destroy those EL84s, just like the old 18 watts Marshalls.

However I don't think it was the smartest move to open the video with the gigantic claim that they "made it sound exactly like the 100w version" but then not show that with a comparison. Even if it does get as close as something like a Mark V25 gets to the Mark V (which to be fair is extremely close under a mic), the fact that they don't do an A/B shootout just makes me think "right, there's no way that's true, they must take me for an idiot."

I'm not sure how I feel about those A/B shootout videos. Rhett Shell, or whatever her name is, did the shootout between the 1959 Handwired 100w and the Friedman Plex and the 1959 sounded "better" in his comparison vid....

....but I've had both amps, and the Plex is way, way better in the room for the tones & feel I'm personally going for. Had I watched his video and poo poo'd the Friedman I would have made the wrong choice.

Gotcha. I was only thinking about USA. If Google is correct, 2000 pounds is $2,700. Yeah, that's not cheap.
