Which mic should I buy for guitar recording?

my faves:

Beta 57 ->lots of mids, tames the bass and highs without sounding boring
Audix I5 -> balanced to my ears.

As others have said, sm57 or even better an sm7b. I've also been using a Heil pr20 lately and like it a lot.

I just bought an Audix i5 and I love it. I'm going to post some Orange AD30 clips as soon as my stand gets here.

For live I like draping a Sennheiser 409 over the cab. In the studio I would use a 57 with a 409.

Can't get the Sennheiser 409 anymore and I don't like the silver 609, it's alot brighter.
I recommend the 906 set to flat, it'll get you close to the 409.

I have 10 gtr mics including quite a few that have been mentioned here and I usually use 3 to 4 mics at once but if I had to live with a single mic on a cab, it would be the Heil PR30.

The 57 and I5 do a good job for their price. I peronsally do not like them as a single mic, maybe using 2 of them combined to get a bigger sound. The 57 works a little better on distorted sounds then the i5, the i5 is a little fuller, but doesn't capture the grit and cut on gain as much imo. The 421 is a great guitar mic, it is a little bright and works good for a variety of stuff, works great combined with a 57.

however, as I mentioned, and someone else mentioned before, go with a Heil PR30! it sounds incredible on a guitar amp, condenser like hi's and pickup, but captures things really well. Cheaper then the 421, you can't go wrong with this mic on guitar or some other sources, much better then a single 57 or i5. The Sm7 is also another dynamic mic worthy of seriously looking into, has more beef and fullness then a 57, I like it better then a 421.
