Bringing this one back up to life... I'm just wondering, Dorado or MakoPlex. The MakoPlex clips I hear all sound as though they're trying to be EVH tones, and that's not my schtick.

See, I'm in the midst of a slight session space revamp/expansion, and I'm looking to pair my VH4S up with another amp for some serious thunder. The V and the 20thA don't really groove together, the tones are too conflicting, hard to explain. But I'm thinking a Dorado or a MakoPlex toe-to-toe with the VH4S would be a nice sound combined.

Just throwing it out there. Ultimately, I'm looking at a 2x15 + 4x12 stereo rig for the VH4S with a AB/Y to another head, potentially a MakoPlex or Dorado through its own 4x12. Done.

Peace Y'All...

The Dorado gets plenty heavy but it does the cool souped up Plexi-thrash tones extremely well also. My friend described mine as a darker SLO. The Dorado is dry and tight in comparison and definitely a bit more modern. My clip skills have improved slightly so maybe I could get you something to a/b the 2 if you shoot me a PM.

I have a Mak4 on the way, I had to cancel my first order, so this is my second time around. I am really kicking myself for canceling the order.

But on the plus side I just got in my rack power amp...A Marshall 9005 that I am going to mod with a resonance control. I can't wait to get it all set up!!!!! My rig is going to look very odd, 8 space rack on top of a 212 cab

I may post up some Mak4 clips up tonight :) we'll see......

I just reamped a song with a soldano, an engl fireball 100, a mak4 (using both makoplex and dorado channels)

Which of your amps would you use over others for an early-mid 80's thrash tone? Has the djunk but not smooth, raw in the mids and top end. Kind of like Kill em All and RTL or Slayer Reign in Blood type stuff. The mako stuff sounds good but it has a smooth top end, doesn't sound as raw as I would like.

I know I could just get a 6 knob JCM800 but where's the fun in that

Are you saying Dorado and Dorado or MakoPlex and Dorado? If the MakoPlex is the one that does the suped up Marshally stuff, it's a candidate. If the Dorado is the 'darker' SLO, wow - this is a candidate too.

I'm not into the Mak4 - too much rig and I'm not into a power amp section with all the bells and whistles. I'm a straight up kinda guy looking for another head to add to the mix. The clips off the Mako sight need some fine attention with ear goggles for me to really get a sense of what's going on. I would love an A/B comparo - thanks!! PM coming...

Does the MakoPlex sound similar to the 20thA XTC's Blue Channel boosted? Cuz if so - too much overlap.

no idea, never played an XTC..... LOVE my Makoplex though. I'm primarily an old school thrash guy. ;)

DO IT! :gethim:

I'll tell you what...I'll post up a comparison clip in 10 mins of the Dorado and Makoplex....keep in mind I didn't have tons of time to tweak them before I reamped them for these clips....I'll definitely be tweaking further (for example the Dorado came out a touch too bright and needed a touch more mids and the Makoplex could use a tad less gain and a tad more treble, etc...)

 I'm so close to getting mine. When I do, I'll record a couple of riffs and post. I keep it simple though. One track, one mic (sm57), maybe a drum track and that's it. Goes into Garageband and done.

I'm stoked!!!!! Seems like these amps have a helluva following... I just think a bitchin' mako or dorado in the studio would be a killer piece. But it has to have its own steez, know what I mean? I'm not into Marshall/Plexi/EVH wannabes. I like 'unique' and 'independent' tone. Diezel - love my VH4S. Bogner - LOVE my 20thA. Got some boutiquey combos too, but another 100 watter would round out the studio nicely.

Music played - ethereal metal, if that makes sense. Here's a list of 'music that's often discussed when I lay down tracks or play or produce':
Smashing Pumpkins
Slash
Tool
AIC
Sabbath
[old] Cult

That's the heavier style of what's happening under my roof... Of course I play a lot of other stuff and run tracks for a lot of other music for production, but personally, ya, I like the aggressive style guitar tones.

Peace - I'll have my headphones ready for the clips!!!! THANK YOU :rawk:

Going by what kind of music you're talking about I feel the Makoplex would be the best choice for you.....but, why not just get the Mak4 and have both :) FWIW I prefer the Makoplex by the smallest of margin both live and recorded....so far.

The Makoplex was described to me as a darker SLO. Also, the Dorado does not sound like an Uberschall at all. The Uber sounds a bit bigger in the room but it can get too snarly and fizzy. That is not an issue with the Mak2 Dorado.
