Its crazy to think when that commercial aired, I was not even born yet. That's actually a pretty bitchin commercial though ?
Probably the same "amp builder, Billy somebody" who did the same thing on the Marshall Amp Forum and I believe other places. The guy swore up and down his amps fixed the problems with and kicked ass on Friedman and other builders. If I remember correctly he had a few converts. Perhaps they were won over once he added cup holders to the amp heads. Beer and amp heads....hey...what could go wrong...Y'all remember back in the day, there was this guy who had a guitar shop with super ugly custom guitars? He was infamous for a minute. And he had some funny articles and whatnot on his site and he trashed every other guitar brand out there. Anybody remember that guy's name?
I bought a 2004 Fender YJM Strat from his store in Las Vegas in 2006. I had visited my dad in Vegas a few months before and went there. All the cool stuff that was usually custom order at most places was freaking hanging on the racks and I actually got to play them. I think I went there twice, and NO GUITAR SHOP will ever even come close to it. The store was gigantic and all the stuff I drooled over in catalogs was in stock. Plus, custom stuff and special-order stuff. ESP, Fender and whatever. I ordered a candy red/rosewood board Malmsteen Strat in late 2006 from Musician's Friend right after Fender announced upcoming changes to the YJM model in 2007. Waited a week or two before I was informed the one and only guitar, they had which matched the description of the one I had ordered, seemed to be lost somewhere in their warehouse.I remember his old website and the giant wall of guitar photos.
That might be one of his famous "fakes," explained in the video above.I'll say this, and this is zero defense of Ed and his store but the best playing, best sounding Les Paul Standard I've ever heard or bought was from his store over the phone lol.
Bought a mid 90's Les Paul Standard from there over 20 years ago and it's still my number one guitar lol. I've never felt a neck like this one on a Les Paul. It's not 50's, 60's, or LP Custom sized neck...damn thing is perfect. Now he probably shaved the damn thing down lol but other than that it's still as I bought all those years ago. Haven't changed a thing.
Lol, yeah it wasn't that, heck I only paid $800 bucks for it. Even years ago, 8 bills for a LP standard and why when I got it I took it to the my repair guy just to look it over, make sure the neck wasn't jacked or something. This guy at the time was one of Gibson's outside official repairman, they sent him a ton of referrals. He confirmed it was all original and the neck was fine. The only thing he could not confirm is if the neck had been shaved down because it had not been refretted, binding was original and if it had been shaved down the paint job was top notch. I've played that guitar so much the back body paint is coming off. Just a great guitar. That might be one of his famous "fakes," explained in the video above.
He took original 50s/60s les pauls, rip the neck off, and replace it. Then sell it as a 50/60.
I've been wanting a YJM for years now but haven't pulled the trigger yet. What's the best year in your experience? Do they have the High e string slipping off problem?I bought a 2004 Fender YJM Strat from his store in Las Vegas in 2006. I had visited my dad in Vegas a few months before and went there. I called Ed Roman's and thank God they still had the guitar that I had pretty much drooled over months before still in stock, and shipped it to me right away. I already had a 2005 sonic blue/maple neck YJM Strat, and now I had two of them from my favorite era of the YJM productions. I heard Ed Roman passed not too long after that and the shop in Vegas did not last much longer. I never heard a bad word about him until after he died and I do not know anything about him personally. Whenever I visit my dad in Vegas and drive by where the old shop was I can't help but miss it. Hell, this week I have unfortunately found myself having big trouble finding anyone with new production 12AX7 preamp tubes in stock. Different times and a different world....
I always preferred the YJM Strat version made between 1998 and 2006. I believe it is version #3. This link has some good info on the YJM Strat history. It does have a vintage spaced bridge so it is possible to pull the high E string off the board, but it was never really an issue for me. Some Fender guitars ship with the neck not properly lined up with the strings or the neck shifts in the pocket in shipping and the high E ends up being too close to the edge of the board. That is a simple fix to line everything up correctly and tighten the neck bolts nice and tight.I've been wanting a YJM for years now but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Ed Roman got a bad rap, I feel. He did fuck a lot of people over, but........
