Why Modern Music Production Sounds like Ass....

I know I'm only being used as a young person example and not being directly singled out, but I dislike Rings of Saturn and dislike The End of Heartache lol I also like records with a more unique mix as well.

For example, take Spawn of Possession's 2012 album Incurso. Fantastic album. I love the sound. But it's very different to the average album from that time.



I also enjoy Death's albums and sound on Human, Individual Thought Patterns, and Symbolic. None of which are the ultra modern productions. Someone said At the Gates and In Flames. While I'm not a huge fan of either, TSD, Slaughter of the Soul, and for In Flames, Jester Race (specifically) sound great. I just also think that while they're unique sounding and good, they could probably be cleaned up a little.

Between the Buried and Me did rereleases of everything from their debut album through The Great Misdirect in 2020, and while I enjoy the originals very much, I also see the increased clarity of individual instruments that the 2020 editions brought out.

Because I know this is the case - I have heard young people (young "metalheads" especially) say that something "sounds like shit" over and over again if it doesn't sound like it was recorded in the same trough Polyphia produces their slop in.

That is definitely the case with a Lady Gaga record, or even an Ozzy record, but it is not even close to being the case with any of the heavy metal records that we are talking about. That's trying to apply the same logic that works in Capital or Virgin records with death metal bands. And not only that, in some cases, many of these famous extreme metal records were literally created by "a guy or two in a bedroom."

Well I should clarify I am a little younger than most on here so my bands are probably not your bands, I was born in the 80s. You say no metal records did that but bands that were big in the 90's and early 00s did that all the time.

Yes, you are correct that lots of big pop bands did that, but the only remotely "metal" bands that I would categorize as doing that were like Metallica and Motley Crue with Bob Rock, or something like that

And sure, those bands definitely benefitted from having someone to exchange ideas with

But the idea that Chuck Schuldiner or Jesper Stromblad or Muhammed Suicmez was like, taking advice on the arrangements from their producer or "collaborating" is fucking laughable

Metallica's problem is a problem that a lot of rich and famous people have which is they surround themselves with "Yes" men telling them that everything they do is great and their shit don't stink. They need someone being critical of their work but they people around them don't want to say anything and make them angry.

Bullshit. There are lots of guys on this forum recording better shit in their home studios. They aren't rich by anyone's definition, just determined and talented. Those two things are what is really missing from todays music.

I didn't mean that every single band in existence collaborates, smaller more underground bands usually have a lot of creative freedom. They also rarely get THAT big into the mainstream though. I also never mentioned pop music did I?

You mentioned Metallica and Motley but there was Nine Inch Nails, Pantera, Sepultura, Deftones, System of a Down, Korn, Rage against the Machine just to name a few off the top of my head. I'm sure you don't like most of those bands but they all were in some metal genre and released albums in the 90's with heavy collaborations.

It's amazing, youtube's algorithm is basically unwatchable garbage already because of AI content, just after a year or two

music, visual art, and movies/animation are next on the chopping block

You are selectively picking what I said and making up conclusions.

I clearly said that huge bands like Metallica had different problems that wasn't money.
I also never said that shrinking budgets was the ONLY reason "everything sounds like shit."

I like every album and band you mentioned . End of heartache rings of Saturn . I like Nails and Electric Wizard periphery . It’s all variety to me
