True. But if you learn how to set intonation, truss rod adjustments and action it should be no problem getting most guitars in playing shape, then just throw a pickup of your choice in the bridge position and you're ready to rip, maybe get some new tuners too if they're not stable enough.. I've been inspired to play with many cheap guitars setup and modified by myself.
Yeah. I have made a lot of cheap guitars good. I think a lot of us are breaking the rules though. Op said perfect guitar/amp with alternate not being perfect but being serviceable. I take that to be a 5150/jcm800. So give me a jcm 800 with my guitar, i am great. And while it is arguably better to have a cheap well set up guitar with a Larry super hairy catepillar, i will choose my jackson every time. I dont think i could bond with any amp like one does with a special guitar

Hell man, my Mark IV is more important to me than any guitar. This specific amp has serious mojo, i'd be crushed if it got stolen and it's just a Mark IV, not a IIC+ or something more valuable. If one of my guitars got stolen, I wouldn't care too much to be honest with you, maybe I just haven't found the right guitar yet?? To be honest, i've never spent more than $1,300 on a guitar. I've tried many and they all sound so similar to me and play kinda the same ... I mean, I can adapt to almost any guitar, any neck size, radius, body shape, whatever just as long as the pickups are good and the action is not too high.

I’d say I’m more bothered by a bad amp than a bad guitar- easy enough to set up a cheap guitar and I’ve played an epiphone for like 12 years so I could suck it up. That being said, if it was a decent enough amp, I feel far more inspired by the guitar I’m playing

AMP

Always been able to get along with a guitar as long as it's set up right and isn't a dog.
Can't even come close to saying the same about amps.

I voted amp. I know I struggle more with amps than I do guitars. Maybe I haven’t found a guitar that’s magic for me yet :)

Amp and it's not even close.

I can make any les Paul shaped object that can be tuned sound like the wrath of God with my Larry, honestly

Sames true, to a lesser extent, with any good high gain head.
