alright ive been thinking about getting a marshall head but dont know which one to get.. 1st thing 1st my price range is 1000 bucks tops.. christmas has put a huge dent in my bank account... also i want one that would be good for metal.. I play MOSTLY drop tuning drop D,C,B,A#... im wanting a marshall that has balls, lots of gain, nice grunt sound.. but can still get that classic marshall tone.. there is so many different kinds of marshalls, i wouldnt know where to start.. i would be putting a OD pedal out front.. for that extra push.. if need be.. plus if need be i could do some mods "DIY" to it to help get more gain, only if it needs it.. so please help a brotha out and guide me in the right direction..it will be 2-3 months before i actually get one, my daughters braces come first!!!! once again thanks, everyone on here is very helpful, ive learned so much about gear/guitar from this site..... thanks

JVM 210H. No gain mods needed at all and take boosts well if you want to use one. Excels at hi gain metal tones. Used for around $900.

okay jvm 210h i will look into that one.. thanks anything else...

Look for a late 70s master volume JMP. GREAT platform for pedals, and sound great by themselves too!

x100

The late 70's Marshall are the best platform of tone and take pedals so well. They can be had for around a 1000 bucks. Here's a clip of my '78 JMP 2204 with no boost....... just a little delay in front of the amp.

I've played several that sound like that...bone stock

While I agree that late 70's JMPs are great amps (I own one now and have owned a few over the years), I don't necessarily think that they are what the op is looking for tonewise. I play in low tunings and tunings as low as A# aren't really JMP territory unless it has been modded heavily. Now, if you want to get an amp to mod the hell out of, then that is a different story. I suggested the JVM because it is plug and play.

I tend to agree.

But I recommend spending a bit more for the 410h. It's got a LOT of tones. With the Voodoo mod, it is the most flexible amp on the market, in my experience.

Also dont dismiss the SLX..... that can be had for $600+ it is 1 channel but 2 volumes for riffin and lead boost in volume and i couldnt imagine an overdrive would be needed for lead as it has PLENTY gain on tap.....
or a JMP1 preamp and poweramp can be had under a $1000 also...if you do a good search.

some may disagree with me on this, but a DSL should get you what you want. Heck, for $1000 you can even find some good modded ones. I got my Deluxe Voodoo modded DSL 50 for $750. Awesome amp.
