Your the man ! Thanks bro !

I need to ask you this question.

I know your preamp filter cap is 32uF+32uF but what do you have in the screen/PI and main??

From the picture I could see a 50uF+50uF cap but I couldn't see the rest.

If we can get all the filtering to 50uF it will tighten up things and get rid of the sag.
It works best with the mods I made through the preamp stages.

Ok, so here is a pic of the caps because i'm not totally sure which one do what.

The two big cans are 50+50, the two smaller caps to the right are 33uf and the other cap in the on the top side of the chassis is a 50uf+50uf

OK,
We could use this one for the preamp and just strap it down. http://www.thetubestore.com/Capacitors/ ... -50uF-500V

I had to strap a few filter caps in my Major because of this problem.

and for the two 33uF caps, if we can't find two 50uF caps we can use a couple of these http://www.thetubestore.com/Capacitors/ ... -47uF-500V

Ok, I thought I noticed some cans strapped in your amp.

Where would be the best place to mount the 50+50 in the chassis and what size wire should I use to connect it? Should it be shielded ?

Thanks

WOW......

I just changed vi cap from 250 to 330. This thing sounds amazing !

Just need to get it tightened up a little bit.

I think it sounds very similar to your amp.
I can't stop playing this thing, just awesome !

I have been chasing this tone for years, I just can't believe I finally have it ! :D

That's awesome Bro.

I think once we get the filtering sorted out we can fine tune the sound by looking at the preamp tubes and power tubes.

Love the read guys! Lots of good info here

Thanks for stopping by my friend, I appreciate the kind words.

Got a couple more .o22 mustards today to change out the remaining Sozos.

Also got a 25k presence pot. May change this out tonight.

Michael, what can I expect from the presence pot change ?

A wider range ? any extra sauce here ? :)

Look what came in today !

Michael, I know we talked about using a 50ufX50uf can for the preamp filters but I thought this might fit better.

Plan on running them side by side on the board. If it doesn't work I can always get the can.

Think I may have some cross talking going on.
i'm thinking the leads on the preamp filter cap on the left are to close to the other components ?

Getting a little squealing going on now at close to full gain.

Amp seams to have more gain but seams loose ? is that possible ?

Yes the resistors are there. Should the amp have more gain with this change ?

Does it look like I installed them correctly ? Thanks

No, it shouldn't have more gain as a result and it does look like you install them correctly.

Maybe we can install a 1meg resistor in series with the one wire mod.

This is done by installing a 1meg resistor to the center lug of Vol-2 and the other end to the "one wire" running to the input resistors.

OK, what will this do ?

-I love this thread!!!,... My hats off to both of ya, only thing that could of made it better would be clips along with the mod process.

-now I'm searching high and low for vintage mustard caps!!

I'm trying to see what effect lowering the gain a bit will have with the volume control problem squealing noise.
I'm also guessing the V1 cathode cap 330uF could be causing us some trouble. I've found over the years different brand cathode capacitors can cause some of the things you're describing. I've never had a problem using Sprague Atom Electrolytics in V1.
If this doesn't work we might have to try putting the filtering back the way it was and try a different approach. If those new filter caps are bad, it will cause the problem you're describing.
I'd look for bad grounds as well, specially along the potentiometers.
Have you tried a different input preamp tube in 1V?

Yes, I tried switching out v1 and it helped some. Still wants to squeal at close to full gain. Also at full gain there seams to be a slight hum. It goes away if I back off the gain.

I will try the 1 meg resister, don't think I have one though.

Thanks man ! having a blast with this.

I sure wish I could do clips  have to get my software fixed.

I will check tonight to see what brand cap I have on V1. But remember I did this before the filter cap change and had no issues.
